Hi Everyone , the club had a big weekend with The National one design Windsurfing titles being held from Friday until Monday and with generally perfect conditions every day we saw a very diverse competition with Course racing , Slalom Racing , and Marathon Racing , and finally freestyle  .

It was amazing to watch as these sailors both men and women either practiced their present skills or trying to remember their old skills from up to thirty years ago as this event signaled their return to the sport.
Our tricky tides definitely made the racing in the lighter conditions on Saturday a challenge so we kept a boat at the bottom of the course ( me and Dallas ) just to tow them back into the racing area . Even though the racing was awesome I like the skills showed in the freestyle with maneuvers like flipping the board on its side and sailing it or flipping the board upside down and again actually sailing it.

I was asked by a member why we hosted this event and my answer was that we did it to promote sailing , promote the club and to help raise interest amongst the competitors for the windsurfing section in the November masters games .

Additional Notes

Juniors is back next weekend starting at 8.30am and 10.30am, and it looks like its going to be hot so bring your sunscreen .

Racing starts on Sunday the 7th of Feb with only a small fleet expected due to a lot of the guys being away racing but we have a couple of juniors now coming up to the lasers so we are now looking for juniors to take over in the Open Bic so if you are keen just let us know .

Hi Everyone, yes its nearly here the 2016 Windsurfing Nationals and with over 30 competitors already registered and good weather forecast it shaping up as a great weekend to check out how the windsurfers do it .

8.30am Juniors

With the weather slowly but surely over the early hours progressively getting worse and wind speeds up over our safe operating level ( 12 knots ) for this class, we decided to rig lasers instead and take anyone who was keen for a sail, and surprisingly there were plenty of takers . My first run was with Brendan and Luke and as both boys are on the large size it was definitely a challenge to not capsize ( too cold ). Casey was out as well with her usual tribe of girls on board. Dan had a go as well, and after an initial capsize, mainly due to having a crew of two on a Laser which is always hard work, managed to give them a wild sail . I have to mention that I took Brendan back out again who weighs as much as me and we actually got the boat planning even Brendan was laughing .

10.30am Juniors

With the wind speeds now around 16/19 knots we decided to cancel this class although Jeff went out just in front of the club for a bit of practice tacking and yes of course capsizing , he didn't last long as it was just getting too windy .

A few of the Lasers came down for a practice with Tom , Greg , John B and James B rigging up their radials and after some pleading from Casey and Pat I let them go out in a bad decision to join in with the adults . Dallas and I manned the Sarah Cooper just in case, and watched everyone battle with the conditions which at times topped over 28 knots ( anemometer ) . There was the odd capsize but in amongst it some very good heavy weather sailing .

Junior Camp

Our sailing camps these holidays have just been a pleasure to run. With so many keen kids and help from our junior race sailors, every camp ran well and more importantly everyone improved their sailing skills . We rounded off the last camp on Tuesday with a sail to the deep hole and back with 8/10 knots easterly and bright sunshine it just seemed the perfect way to finish the two days of sailing .

Additional Notes

Don't forget club racing starts on Feb 7 with an 8 race series to follow and in amongst it is a round of the state laser titles on the 20th of March so its looking good for 2016.

REMEMBER ALL RACING AND BOAT LEASE HAVE HAD A SMALL PRICE INCREASE IN 2016

Finally if you can help this weekend as support for the canteen it would be greatly appreciated as the canteen is a vital part of financial support of your sailing club , if you can help either contact me or Pieter Verstoep to lets us know when you might have some free time .

Hi Everyone , well 2016 is finally here and the club has been open since the 4th with a two day camp and then on Sunday with the launching of the Juniors .

8.30am Juniors

With brilliant sunshine and winds gently from the e/s/e we had a roll up of 15 experienced and new sailors for this session. With Kyle back driving Sarah Cooper, and Tianna and I coaching and catching kids in boats, it was an opportunity to see how not only the new kids advanced but to also see how the kids from last weeks camp went after two days of learning. I am pleased to say that I was very impressed, and so was Tianna, with people like Ronin, Lewin, and Hallam steering and generally sailing around the reaching course with ease . Well done to everyone !

10.30am Juniors

All we had on the water were Cody, who had helped with the 8.30 class in a Tera, and Casey, Dallas and Pat in the club 420, who have over the Xmas break been practicing in the boat with the plan to occasionally race the 420 and 470 in club racing when they aren't racing Lasers . The team is slowly coming together so much so that we are going to put the spinnaker fittings back on the boat and give them a go at that as well .

Additional Notes

Racing starts back on Sunday the 7th of February for the Summer series with 8 races marked for the Series, dates as follows :
  • 7/14/21/28 February
  • 6/13/20 March (with the 20th incorporating a round of the Laser state titles)
  • 3rd April (last race of the series)

Windsurfing Nationals are taking place on the Australia Day long weekend starting on January 22nd and finishing on the 25th.

Assistant Instructors Course at YQ is on 27th and 28th and costs $55.00 for the two days so its good value , I believe that so far three of our members will be attending so lifts are available .

Pan Pacific Masters Games are also booked starting on November 4th and going to November 13th with the first class of the rank being General Dinghys the Windsurfing and finishing with the multihulls so keep it in your diaries as the last event was a great success and we are hoping this one will be even better .
