Hi Everyone , It looks like we have covid back and also a nasty flu virus with Jade and her mum coming down with covid and Charlie and Tom contracting the flu so take care everyone I have had my booster shots and also a flu shot so fingers crossed its all going to miss me . Our new saftey boat is slowly taking shape and should be on the water soon and yes its the big white boat currently in the cage I am in the process of cleaning the fuel system as she has been in storage for 4 years so the fuel is dirty , luckily I managed to buy a trailer last week for her as well which we will use until we have an aluminium trailer built as we had to borrow sarah trailer originally so poor sarah had to weather last weeks storms inn the water . We only had one issue which was she broke a mooring line but as we always double up when she stays overnight we still had the back up holding .
Excitement is also building for Yepoon whith another one of our junior sailors ( Xavier ) signing up as well so that means we now have four sailors in the junior Bic fleet so well done everyone .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
It was great on sunday seeing a hardy group of young sailors signing on for this class and with the majority being girls it was left up to Xavier and Zack to hold up the boys tradition of trying to out sail the girls . As promised we set Laya up in a Bic for the first time and with Daniel instructing her from shore she was soon out there giving it a go , we could even see the smile from the shore .
Conditions were great with winds changing from n/w to s/s/w so there was some hurried course adjustments by Jason and the crew to keep the team sailing . I have to mention Tristan for his outstanding sailing effort as he was sent away from the group on an upwind course which he absolutely blitzed , Charlie and I at first couldnt believe his upwind but he just kept doing it so well done captain ! I only hope that we can keep the current number of girls sailing  as its great to see them noy only sailing but also having fun on the water which doesnt include capsizing right Savannah ?
10.30 Youth Training ;
With most of the crew back we had a good group for this session and with the winds turning s/e at around 6/9 knots it was perfect for a nice triangle so we left the two early marks in place and just added the green starboard mark . Taylah and Ross were really nailing their tacks and gybes and were even yelling up-up on the upwinds I suppose it saves charlie and I doing it , there was even a protest hearing afterwards so some explanation needed . Daniel showed that his recent trip to manly for youth week really paid off with his general sailing awesome to watch showing great boat control . With yepoon not far away it seems to me that all the sailors need to look at wind angles more as there was a perfect opportunity to do some sailing in the lee on the down wind back from green so yes guess whats on the cards for the next lesson . Opps I should have mentioned Reece and Harvey as you guessed it covid has struck their household as well hope you are all on the road back to good health.
1.30 pm Open Racing .

Charlie and Taylah were put in charge of running the session as they both want to become coaches so practice makes perfect . We used our southern course so starting between ephriam and soverign and place the top mark down near runners and the down wind mark at the top of soverign . The original winds were around 10 knots but during the race it did gust up to 16 knots making the upwind a bit punishing so everyone said I am not sure how true this is because the start boat crew didnt give me a report so Iam only guessing ? so yes I will be asking for a report in future from the crew now that should be interesting .. I will added last weeks results in next weeks report.

Update :

Our canteen which rarely gets a mention had a great day as well and earned just over a hundred dollars for the day so thank you Kelly for your efforts as every penny counts these days , and the coffee is good as well !

Hi Everyone  First of the rank is that we are looking for volunteers for september while the bulk of our instructors and volunteers will be away at Yepoon for the youth Regatta so if you have a boat licence or sailing experience or you would just like to help just let us know at the club so that we can run our junior sailing as usual . We have seven sailors competing in both lasers and Open bic skiff ajnd after our recent good showing at Manly Youth Week in the open divisions we are adding three green fleet sailors as well in Harvey Reece and Tristan sailing Open Bic so we need to get behind these people and support them . You will also notice these three sailors also now volunteering at 8.30 as part of their sailing experience where knowledge is a big part of becoming an instructor .

8.30AM Sunday Juniors ;

With a few people registering on saturday we knew we would have a reasonable group of beginners with Charlie , Ross and I originally in charge but luckily we also had Reece , Harvey and Tristan as well which was great as I had over thirty stitches in my right ear yes melanoma so I knew I would be a bit slow .
The conditions were actually quite mild with the wind starting out w/n/w at around four knots so with Jason in charge we set a nice reaching course which we soon increased as everyone soon had a grip on conditions and were off tacking and also some gybing . Once jason increased the course and set it more north we soon had everyone out there just cruising and no capsizes whether tacking or gybing even as the wind started to come up a knot or so . We did have a couple of standouts in Zack who although being away for a few weeks was doing great tacks and gybes and maintaining good boats speed while Laya was so smooth I asked her if she would like to try a open bic and my answer was a giant smile so looks like we might have another Bic sailor on the way .
10.30 am Youth Training;

With Jade ( covid 19 ) and Daniel and Taylah away on school duties we still had Ross plus Harvey Reece and Tristan rigging up for 10.30 . The wind had come up a bit to around 6/7 knots and was slowly swinging N/E so after a discussion regarding upwind and downwind sailing guess what course we gave them yep you guessed it we gave them a downwind to the yellow at the canal then quite a tough upwind back toward the bridge . We had our usual trouble with the bics not letting their sails out on the downwind causing boats to get out of control especially Tristan and Reece who took a couple of laps to figure that out that its a fine line between out enough and out too far . Ross and Harvey absolutely nailed the upwinds which was tricky with the constantly moving winds but the both took the liftd well , the only downside is still bearaway mark rounding while maintaining speed so something to work on boys . All in all a good session even Tristan had his sailing boots on the right feet this time .
1.30 pm Open Racing;
There was no racing on the day as we raced the week before so as its usually every second week club champs we decided to make racing next weekend so a few of the guys just went for a practice run while we watched from the shore and to be honest my stitches were starting to hurt causing a headache so I was happy to stay ashore . Finally one of our racing stallwarts Greg will be missing for a couple of months as he and his wife are of to canada and the states for a bit of a drive , I believe they brought a cadilac so the debit card will certainly get a workout and the fuel station!

Hi Everyone , Firstly I would like to mention three of our youth sailors who have just last week spent 6 days sailing at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Youth Week . Youth week is an annual event with a mixture of boats from 49ers to Opti and Sabot and although the numbers were down from previous years it was still a great week of sailing and learning with two days of training and four days racing . The Open Bic fleet was small but the competition was great to watch ( yes charlie and I were there ) with Jade and Daniel sailing fast in every race with Jade getting to a lead of three points by the end of friday and Daniel right behind but unfortunately for jade on saturday a judge called a disqualification on her which I will admit is the rule but was definitely harsh at that level of youth sailing especially when other competitors were allowed to finish outside the finish line and still get points . To come back from such a disappointment was awesome for jade as she ended up third overall and first female and Daniel actually took out the division wityh a well deserved first . Then we had Ross in laser 4.7 who also seffered a penalty which included a mis comunication from a judge forcing him to restart a race last when all he needed was a 360 turn but overall he came top 10 in the 4.7 fleet so to all you guys well done from Paradise Point Sailing Club!
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
With it being the last weekend of school holidays we didnt expect many starters and very cold but we did manage to have a few sailors turn up including Harvey , Reece and Tristan who we thought were away on holidays still . Our beginners in Yasmin , Grace and Daniel soon had their boats ready and after discussing the conditions we set them off in basic westerly around 2/4 knots and an outgoing tide . There were no crews so everyone had a session of solo sailing mainly practicing on tacking and I have to say everyone went really well especially daniel who just cruised around the course so next week we are going to concentrate on gybing so awesome work boys and girls .
10.30 am Youth Training;
With a few away at manly it was only Reece , Harvey , Tristan and Taylah who ventured out in what was now around 6 knots of wind with an occasional burst of around 9 knots oh I shouldnt forget that Guy was also out there for a practice sail . Taylah just cruised around the course with perfect tacks and gybes and plenty of boat speed as did Harvey so after a while we sent both he and Taylah of down to green for a nice upwind and downwind . Guy had an early swim and I am still amazed he continued on as it was cold and he wasnt wearing a wetsuit . Reece was going well but as the wind increased he did struggle with the gybes which I told him later was he didnt have enough vang on while captain capsize ( tristan ) after putting his boots on the wrong foot was also out there cruising around just needed a bit more main on right tris! They both finally capsized and looked way to cold to continue so we pulled the pin which even Taylah and Harvey were happy about .
1.30 pm Open Racing
Buy the time we set up for this session the wind had swung around to the s/s/e at around 10/12 knots so we set a course starting at the canal with a top mark down at runners then west and back north to the start finish buoy and for once we had starboard rounds which I had written down as port but I soon changed it after Casey spotted my mistake and guess what for a change they all went the right way around the buoys unlike previous times when we have set starboard! We lost one boat early as yep Casey went the wrong way around and was adamant she had got it right well that was until she went ashore and read the sailing instructions . Greg took it out with Peter and Nic following him home whit a race time all up of 1hr 20 minutes for the last boat over the line which made charlie and I very happy as it was freezing out ther , it was so cold in fact for the first time ever I used the boat hook to pull the buoys up as my fingers were already numb from the wind .
News Extra ;
When you next visit the club you will see another rigid  inflatible white in colour which has been donated to the club yes donated by a local family who approached us several weeks ago with the offer , what the boat is actually worth is irevelant its the kindness of this family that has blown us all away and why did they do it well they said they have watched for years the work we do for family,s and children in general in teaching sailing including the laughter and smiling faces which they are going to miss as they are moving from ephriam to sanctuary cove so thank you to the Savage Family for your generous donation
