Sunday 23rd August - Sailing

26/8/2015

Hi Everyone , firstly if anyone is free next Saturday we are hoping to finish the exterior painting of the club building so if you can spare a few hours just let me know . This should be the final coat and I will even try to not paint the windows this time .
We are also still looking for some volunteers for the canteen so if you think you can spare a couple of hours just let us know , I am trying to organise a training day on Sunday the 20th of September for those who are interested .

8.30am Juniors

Well with overcast and humid conditions but at least some wind we were back to reasonable numbers for the session and as usual we even had a new set of newbies with Emily and Amily who although were very timid at first eventually arrived back on shore smiling and laughing thanks to Caseys expert instruction on the laser .
Everyone sailed well and enjoyed a trouble free session , it was so good we let everyone stay on the water until 20 past ten .

10.30am Juniors

With the conditions roughly north and reaching around 6 knots but with general wind shifts from n/w to n/e it was a challenge for all eight sailors , which with a bit of coaching from the safety boats everyone managed to come to grips with and generally sail well.
My picks were Kyle , Cody and Dan, who as the session went on managed to sail faster and faster although at times some people did miss the buoys ? right Kyle ?

Open Bic / Laser

With Pat out of action with a dud wrist and Jonah missing, it was only Dallas in the Bics and Casey and Jasmine in the 4.7 lasers . For me it was a very scary race and at one stage I thought I was dreaming because both the girls and Dallas actually listened to me and did exactly what I said yes exactly ! which resulted in them having a great race. Even Will commented on the speed . Casey came first and Jasmine capsized twice on the home leg, and we have decided to blame Aidan not us for distracting Jas because he wasn't there so it seemed fair right Aidan .

Adult Racing

With a fleet of 10 boats and initially winds basically north at around 6/8 knots, we set a start at the club yes it was downwind ( start boat broken ? ) with mark A at Runners and B in the Sovereign channel we expected a pretty slow race but good old mother nature came good with winds increasing to around 10/16 knots which made for great racing and a few capsizes . Mentioning capsizes the award goes to Michelle, as when she tried to avoid John who capsized at the mark in front of her, she turned too fast that the boat took off but she didn't which resulted in what we thought was a reverse half pike with a twist. Very good Michelle ! Oh yes, who won, Will with Tom second .

Additional Notes

For anyone interested, there is a rescue boat training day on Sunday the 20th of September so if you would like to help on the rescue boats but don't have the experience come along and complete the familiarization course which will start at 1.30 pm

Oops, almost forgot Kyles dad ( Col ) is taking photos of Sunday Juniors and loading them on the website so if you see anything you like and would like a copy just let us know or talk with Col on Sundays .

Sunday 16th August - Juniors and Racing

19/8/2015

Hi Everyone, firstly hopefully everyone noticed the different look on the front of the clubhouse on Sunday ? Andrew , Donna and I managed between us to virtually complete the top coat on the front of the building and finish the sealer coat on the waterside . The end result to me was a totally different look , now all we have to do is complete the rest.

8.30am Juniors

We are not sure what happened but numbers were low with only five juniors in the class . The good side was except for Ava ( retired hurt , not sailing related apparently skateboard on Saturday? )
So our new sailors from the previous week got Tianna and my total attention in learning steering . Yes there were some out of control issues, some capsizes and brothers not getting along ( unusual A ? ) The brothers were easily fixed we just put them in separate boats >

10.30am Juniors

Even though the winds had settled in to around 8/10 knots numbers were the same as the morning very low . Those who came sailed really well and with some extra coaching we managed to get Kyle up to speed in his tacking procedures . The resident two crazies were out there that is Daniel and Jess who even though the sailed in
basically shirts and shorts and capsized at least 4 times each said it wasn't cold ????? see what I mean Crazies . The smart one was Kyle who actually did come in because IT WAS COLD!

Open Bic / Laser

Conditions were reasonable for these guys with winds around 6 to 10 knots but plenty of tide , they all had an interesting race with especially Jonah and Dallas who were neck and  neck for the whole course with Jonah just pipping Dallas and Pat not far off in third . Casey actually sailed with the adults as no other 4.7 lasers turned up , she was right there with them until the clew strap came undone ( she will have to speak to the person who rigged it ? ) and by the time she managed to re attach it the fleet had bolted .

Adult Racing

With a reasonable fleet including Chris Connelley who we havnt seen for some time the guys started in reasonable conditions but it was definitely flukey with shifts and wind speed variation making it slow going at times . It was actually a good race as the pack generally kept together throughout the whole race . We did however shorten the race as conditions were failing and we wanted to get back before dark with Chris just first over the line and then I think Macca and definitely Tom with a bit of help from me ( instead of wake up Jeff it was wake up Tom !remember Tom Straight lines to the finish are best ! )

Upcoming Activities

Painting - No painting this weekend as I am off to a corporate day
Club Powerboat Rescue Day : tentatively Sunday the 20th of September but I will confirm that next news letter . For those who don't know we run our own rescue boat handling courses for those parents who want to become more involved on the water so if you think you might like to have a go just let me know at the club .

Sunday 9th August - Juniors and Racing

Hi Everyone,  just quickly to firstly remind everyone that the continuation of painting the club is again on this Saturday from 8.00 am so if you have some spare time come along and give us a hand , paint , brushes and humour supplied . Also a reminder for all current members that the AGM is on on Sunday the 30th of August at 4.00 pm after racing.

8.30am Juniors

With good winds and a outgoing tide it was if not a bit cold a great morning for learning to sail . Amongst some of our regular sailors we had 5 new kids join in for the first time and with a bit of coaching from Tianna, Casey & me we actually managed to get the lot of them up to steering on their first day . It was a surprise to see both the new girls and boys managing to steer the boat reasonably straight and also tack. We actually put little Ava ( 4 years old ) in charge of one Tera but the straight line sailing became a bit of a challenge but to her credit she hung in there with Olivia one of the new girls and actually helped her to learn how to steer .

10.30am Juniors

By the time we started this session the winds were excellent at around 8knots from the s/e so we started with just some windward and leeward sailing in and out of a series of buoys. Now all we have to teach them all is that when they arrive at the marks not to run into each other!
Despite this problem we went ahead a practiced racing skills which turned out to be  a great session with Ollie and Cody dominating the up front positions and even Jess in the laser holding her own against the boys . We even had Alex back after his broken arm in his bic and like the rest he sailed well after such a long break ( no pun intended )

Open Bic/4.7 laser

With Dallas away snow skiing it was up to Jonah and Pat to fly the flag for our bic sailors and they both did well in shifty and dropping wind conditions . The upwinds towards Runners were especially hard because as the wind dropped the tide increased so concentration was the key word . Both guys sailed well and even Pat actually sailed next to the sand banks and western shore on the upwind which definitely worked as Jonah had gotten away early and we didnt think Pat would catch him up which he did so good thinking Pat . Casey,s club boat is now fully turboed so both Casey and Jasmine had a very competitive race and with a bit of coaching from us on their upwind legs especially with Jasmine she did manage to catch up on Caseys early lead just not enough to beat her over the line .

Open Racing

We decided to start the open fleet in front of the club so the bridge came into play but it was alright Tom didnt try one of those tricky under the bridge starts that he is well know for . In actual fact Tom lead for the whole race despite the start boat crew betting that he would probably capsize on the down wind legs he kept Macca and the rest of the fleet at bay for the whole race , even Maurie started with the fleet this week unlike last week when have decided to give everyone a 90 second head start . Another good day on the water guys .

Canteen

A special Thanks to Lyn Pats mum for opening the canteen on Sunday and also thanks to Daniel for showing her how to use the coffee machine as Tianna and I didnt have a clue ? it looks like we should have another canteen introduction day ?

2016 Pan Pacific Masters Games as we have applied to be the host club again following the success of the 2014 Games .
