Hi Everyone , Firstly big news regarding our youth racing series and that is that we are changing the time for the sunday racing from 1.25 pm to 11.00 am to better suit all our keen racing sailors so now racing will be on the 2nd and 4th sundays , the training will still happen but now it will only be on the first and Third sunday each month . A notice will be posted at the club or if you are not sure what activity is on just contact the club and we can let you know . Winter is finally on its way as its certainly been very cool in the mornings and with the westerly winds even though they are generally light are adding to the chill factor but I see on the weather chart that rain is on its way so that should up the overnight temperatures a bit with the clouds keeping the daytime temperature trapped underneath it yeah! . Registration for this years midwinter cup will be open this weekend so keep an eye out and I suggest that if you need a club boat to race please book your boat asap as we only have four boats available .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
We as I said earlier its definitely cool for this class and as expected numbers are down on summer so its only first timers and first timers who are signing on . Reece , Harvey and Tristan were there to help out as usual and yes they are a great bunch of young sailors always on the beach rigging on the safety boat helping and jumping on boats to show the new sailors how its done ! So what was the weather like well as I said the winds were from the west  at around 2/4 knots with the last of the outgoing tide conditions were good for our newer sailors to give it a go . We had a returning sailor in Hanna who was a part of a school group in march who really enjoyed her sailing so has come back to give it another try and she even might suck dad into trying as well after a 30 year absence. Ollie and jack after a session with Tristan managed to get out there on their own for the first time and although it was light with charlies help the were soon getting between the two course buoys . Luckily the tide was fast going from outgoing to incoming so even Harrison in the Taz slowly managed to beat the current and sail the reach but dont forget mate in light winds you have to sit forward otherwise you cant beat the outgoing tide ! A special thanks to everyone for washing and packing up the boats as it saves charlie and i a lot of work at the end of the day
10.30 am Youth Training
We had seven people signed on for this class and they soon had their boats ready and even Taylah had her boat rigged as well. With the winds up around 4-6 knots and an occassional 8 knot gust and with the bulk of therace fleet present and a couple saying they couldnt make it we decided to run the days race earlier at 11.00 am which made all the parents happy as they got to go home earlier . We set a triangle course with the start finish line in front of the pontoon then mark A about 20 metre,s to the north the south to the green channel marker and the west to a green buoy before returning to A again for four laps . The start was good with everyone these days hanging around the line and once the start whistle blew they were all off to A which after a bit of a struggle by some to get around they were off to the green channel marker on a broad reach which by the way everyone when you are on a broad reach you have to let the sail out that way charlie and I dont go horse yelling at everyone to let the sail out! . They all stayed pretty much in a group probably so they could keep chatting instead of breaking away and sailing a better course but at least everyone sailed well . Our recent additions in Halle , Leila and Harrison are improving each week and Gemma , Harvey , Tristan , Reece and Gemma are doing the same with much tighter racing they just need to read the course better as even with a briefing and righting the course down and sticking it on their boat the still kept asking questions about what mark was next? So who came first well it was Tristan with Harvey right there and also Gemma and Reece followed by Hanna and Leil and seventh was Harrison who is the newest competitor so struggled a bit on the upwind sections but he was still grinning at the end so well done everyone !

1.30 pm Open Racing was not on last weekend it will be on this sunday as its the third sunday of the month at least Charlie and I got to have lunch for a change rather than a packet of chips on the start boat.

Hi Everyone , Well I think winter is definitely creeping up on us as its definitely getting chilly at night although the days are absolutely awesome with plenty of sun and reasonable winds especially towards the end of may .
AGM
The clubs annual AGM ( annual general meeting ) is booked for Saturday the 3rd of June . If you are a full adult member and would like to listen as to how your club is progressing just let the club office no you would like to attend as we need numbers to make the meeting official , it normally takes about 1hr to complete the meeting then away we go for another year.
Mid Winter Cup
Our annual junior/youth sailing event has come around again and you will be able to register as from June 1 with the event scheduled for the weekend of the 24/25 then all we need is good weather and plenty of keen young sailors to come along and have some fun with great prizes including fun racing and competition . Our canteen will be open each day for great coffee and a barbeque so that means at least charlie will be there for the bacon and egg rolls !
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
With a few parents letting us know on saturday that would be sailing sunday including another first timer we we pulled out four boats including the taz as Harrison likes sailing it , we actually had more volunteers than sailors but that was ok as it makes up for the busy times . Tristan was again in charge of the briefing and did well as usual well maybe except for just a little trouble with marker buoys and wind direction . While on the subject of Tristan he took it upon himself to start a note system with the first booklet about the basics of the Tera and how to rig one so well done mate !
The winds were around 4 knots but unfortunately westerlies so you guessed it it kept coming and going and shifting direction like saturday ( adult learn to sail ) but everyone managed to generally find it and have some fun . Tristan even took a new sailor out and showed him the basics without capsizing but we did at least discuss what happens . Charlie had been watching Saraha and said that she sailed really well on the day so well done Saraha .
10.30 am Youth Training

Even with a couple of people missing we still had a good size group for 10.30 and yes a bit more wind but still westerly based . So how did they all go with the shifting conditions well from what I saw they all managed to cope much better than in past days where the winds were shifty and once we got a few people to sit forward ( Leila , Tristan ) everyone kept reasonable boat speed around the course . The more experienced sailors had to Gybe at one end which made it interesting amongst the boats that were tacking the same mark and I bet none of them even realised there were no collisions at red with half the fleet going one way while the rest the opposite . I did notice Hanna and Leila ( wetsuit 1/2 ) have improved their sailing and after some on shore instruction regarding tacking they were much improved so well done girls . Harrison is really coming to grips with both tacking and Gybing so to me he is definitely a potential champion sailor of the future and his super keenness doesnt hurt ! . While picking up the buoys at the end and it was accidental ! I accidentally poured water all over originally Taylahs feet but since there was no reaction I then accidentally moved up to her arms before she realised but it was ok because as usual she blamed Charlie ? and yes it was very funny .
1.30 Open Racing.
Well this was very different for a change and it had nothing to do with the weather , so what happened well I will admit it and it doesnt happen often a buggered up the course instructions on the white board. Everything started bad with nic going to the wrong mark to start so we had to wait for him to sail up to the start line at ephriam then once he arrived and the winds moving around  still and the speed increasing to around 8 knots gusting we sent them south first and all was going well with steve in his new boat out in front and nic on his tail and they rounded A well ahead of the rest of the fleet and thats were my stuff up popped its head up ! So what did I do well I didnt put start B in which I aleays do and everyone thought they started A so they got confused and it even had charlie and I confused and scrambling for the course details as we were wondering
why everyone was we thought going the wrong way and not necessarily the same as the other competitors wrong way until finally we made the decision to shorten the race . Tom had given up as did Ben yes ben was back and the both shortcutted it between the islands . Well I suppose I should be allowed the occasional stuff up and to my defence I was moving house with my son until 10 pm and all I had for dinner was a cup of soup and toast !

Hi Everyone , The club is looking for sponsors to help promote the clubs activities as in our Mid Winter Cup in june 2023 , this event is for junior sailors only and will take place over two days with both fun races and competition . Sponsorship can be as little as $100.00 or prize donation iso if you are interested just give the club a call and we can have at chat about your sponsorship proposal short or long term.
Our numbers were small for the day but being mothers day we expected as much as mums are very important so their day should be celebrated and by the sound of it those who I asked had already looked after mum early or were off out after sailing to shout mum a great day so well done everyone !
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
As expected we only had a couple of people at 8.30 class so lucky for them they all had a private lesson with an instructor . Jade took skye , Tristan took Oscar and I had Harvey .
The main focus for them all was tacking so we did our usual beach thing so we could get them facing front and generally steering It took a while but Jade soon had Skye tacking and facing front so she will have one up on her brother while Harvey who has had a few sessions really needed work on stalling out in his tacks so it was foot over the strap look forward change sides and rudder in the middle because you guessed it he was looking backwards . So how did he go well the smiles toward the end gave it away yep he was pretty good . Tristan who had oscar had some trouble with Oscars size so I suggested he kneel in the boat which gave him enough room to tack and just duck under the boom , why didnt we just put him in a bigger boat well it all happens much faster the bigger the boat so using a tera was just perfect . At the end the all handled the light conditions well so now we have to wait until next weekend to see what they remember?
10.30 am Youth Training
With about half the fleet messaging that were doing something with mum we only had a few starters and with the afternoon racing looking doubtful we decided to run the gazetted race at 11.30 am instead . Although the wetsuit girls ( Halle and Leyla ) had never raced before we talked them into it just for fun . The winds were around 8 to 10 knots from the s/e so we set a course starting just in from of the boat ramp and turning over near ephriam for a quick reach back . Jason was in charge while coached from the shore , I kept the girls back until 15 seconds before the start while Harvey just ducked the line and took of and Tristan with a passenger ? stalled out before finally getting going . There was a couple of capsizes with Halle,s being the most exciting , from what it looked like she tacked the boat got a gust missed the hiking strap and did an arms and legs backflip and yep the water was cold . As usual Harvey just bolted and was first over the line after 4 laps while Leyla was second Halle third and we wont mention missing the mark on one leg and Tristan 4th including capsize . mainly caused by too many people on the boat . I have suggested to the girls that they borrow a club wetsuit next week as the were both shivering while packing up..
1.30 Racing
There was no racing on the day so a few of the racers decided to go for a bit of training and the conditions were really good with the wind around 13/15 knots but it did look threatening for rain and yep you guessed it in started raining and what happens when it rains yep the wind falls out so we had people just managing to sail back ( casey ) wile the rest did a mixture of rudder paddling bot rolling and just generally crawling to the beach .
Thanks to everyone for helping charlie and I to pack up because it was pretty dismal for the rest of the arfternoon but at least charlie could spend the afternoon with Mum and me with my family.

Hi Everyone , Dont forget everyone that next sunday is mothers day so for all the kids and fathers out there dont forget to buy a special present for all the mums out there as its truly a special day hopefully some of the answers I got last sunday from the junior and youth sailors regarding what they were doing for mum will be upgraded at least as far as breakfast in bed and yes I will ask again on sunday .I also suggest that everyone start thinking about wetsuits as when I was retrieving Sarah on monday the water was decidedly colder especially with the westerly wind which will be gone by sunday apparently replaced by rain so definitely wetsuit time . If you dont have one just check our stock of wetsuits at the club .
We are looking for both sponsors and volunteers for the Mid Winter Cup in June , sponsorship can be small or large and volunteering can be as little as a couple of hours or longer , for more information as to how you can support your club either email us or have a chat on the weekend .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
With the temperature slowly dropping as winter fast approaches there was definitely a nip in the air when I arrived at the club at seven but definitely didnt deter a group of hardy young sailors and even a couple of newbies from signing on . The wind was basically from the west with a bit of shift in it at around 2/4 knots so just perfect for learning . Henry and Sky brother and sister were surprised when with some early instruction from jade we let them sail without an instructor and actually did well in the mild conditions as did emilio who is gaining confidence sailing solo each time he goes out . There was a bit of a change on the beach with the Instructors looking after the beach instead of me while as promised I crewed with Guy as he had been asking for some on water driving instructions as he was in charge of the safety boat while jason is away looking at polar bears yes you read it right Jason is looking at polar bears in the arctic . I should mention one of our assistant instructors who was away sick and that is Harvey it was a bit strange not having him around on sunday so get well soon mate ! we missed your help especially on the shore talking to people and thanks Reece for taking your friend out for a sail as well I noticed he came back in smiling ! so he must of had fun.
10.30 am Youth Training
Well after the previous weekend of no wind and also minus no wind nearly everyone turned up to go around again and at least this weekend there was more wind even if it was basically from the west which is always a bit of a challenge with it being shifty and flukey but at least we had winds from 4-7 knots which compared to the previous weekend was a definite improvement . We did discuss the previous weekends conditions at the briefing and then we had a look at the days course and how to sail it ? We did find out one thing in the session and that is we need to teach everyone what the navigation marks mean so next weekend charlie is going to give everyone a basic rundown on what the marks mean including the landmarks around our sailing area . The course seemed pretty simple to me which was down to the canal gybe the yellow and across the channel to the green nav mark then up to the clu and around the green club buoy so what went wrong ? well everyone followed Torsin who sailed straight past the yellow heading for the seaway so we were soon after the fleet to turn them around and sail against the tide and shifting winds which yes was a struggle for some of the sailors and the instructors but we finally got them all back there . So who sailed best well that would be Reece , Zach , Leila with Reece just flying around the course and Zach not far behind , remember everyone navigation marks next sunday!
1.30 PM Open Racing
With the wind speed increasing to around 8-12 knots and slowly turning north we set a course in the main channel starting down at runners with A and C in between ephriam and soverign so a good upwind slog made more interesting by the absolutely roaring tide ( we actually set the start line twice due to the tide flow ) With only four sailors out there it was a hotly contested start line with Casey , Greg and Nic right there as the flag dropped and Steve a couple of seconds behind . I took special interest at the start as Casey was sailing my new laser as yep I still have a dodgy ankle and Iam under doctors orders not to sail so I was just making sure nobody ( greg ) ran into it at the start but it was all good ! The upwind was full of tacking up the east bank out of the tide although Steve tried the west side but as soon as he tacked to come east the current got him and he just went sideways . Nic and Casey had a great battle on the upwind especially while was just behind but by the last upwind Case had broke free and sailed away coming over the line well first with Greg second and Nic third with steve after a couple of sand bar meetings fourth . Casey was super impressed with my boat and she said it is so light she had trouble at first tacking as it was really quick which is what I experienced on my first sail so to overcome it she didnt roll the tacks as much and she just accelerated away !

Hi Everyone , After a week full of high winds it finally slowed down last weekend with saturday perfect for Adult learn to sail lessons with light winds and blue skies making it absolutely perfect for introduction day . I wish I could say the same for sunday which slowly got blue skies but very little wind so it was lucky there was no open or youth racing especially with the absolutely roaring current. Please also put it in your calendar that the clubs annual AGM is set for 3/6/23 with a notice going out to all current members , this meeting is a perfect opportunity for the committee to let the members know how their club is travelling so we enchourage all members to come along. We are looking for volunteers and sponsors for our annual midwinter cup ( 24/25 june ) so if you would like to sponsor the event or volunteer some time over the two days just let the club know as it will be much appreciated . I have to mention this even if people dont believe me while coaching emilio at 8.30 session while standing in the water I felt pressure on my foot and it was actually a crab and he had his pincer around my foot squeezing it but as I lifted my foot out of the water he dropped off so nobody believed me but they did hear the yelp , hopefully the first and last time for that experience.
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
Well as I mentioned in the introduction the weather was overcast but not really cold and with 5 sailors officially booked in we knew it wouldnt be that big a morning , Tristan was in early checking the weather and tides so that he could conduct the briefing while the rest of the assistants helped rig boats as we had several newbies sign up for the session . Once all the boats were set up including the Taz as Harrison wanted to take a friend out we headed off to the briefing . Tristan gets better each week as presenter and speaks with a clear voice and is even learning how to involve the group through questions and answers .
Taylah and Guy were in charge of setting a course which was difficult as the wind shifted from west / north west / then north east and with a average wind speed of two knots and a raging outgoing current the safety boat was soon down near the canal coaching people back . Harrison in the Taz did struggle a bit with too much weight down the back as did even the people without crew , it was just one of those days but at least the weather was warm . I took emilio aside for some one on one sailing as he didnt have anyone to sail with and we practiced tacking and general sailing but as the session went on and the wind died out he soon joined the rest of the sailors drifting backwards towards the seaway so all in all a frustrating session for everyone .
10.30 am Youth Training
This group of sailors is showing good promise for the future with 8 to 10 sailors signing on every sunday , it was great to see them all out there rigging boats and even organising help getting their boats down of the racks and evn getting help putting them back ,luckily no one was watching conditions yep you guessed it the wind was getting slower and the outgoing current was still roaring towards the seaway . It was always going to be a struggle trying to convince them all that you can actually sail in one knot ok you cant sail well but you can make ground . Wit Charlie , Taylah and I in sarah we were kept busy going from boat to boat giving everyone tips and at times everyone was actually moving even sometimes in the right direction but once the cloud cover left the winds just died completely so most everyone just drifted ashore and walked back . De briefing was fun especially trying to convince them all that they did at times get going but like most sailors there was more whinging about lack of wind than positive thoughts , hopefully we will have the breeze back for next week as it sure makes it easier to coach when there is wind !
1.30 pm Open Racing
There was no open racing as the laser states  were on but they will be back next sunday , a couple of guys and girls did turn up but conditions were just too slow and they couldnt talk themselves into it so we packed up early and left steve there attempting to repair multiple leaks in his laser ( good luck mate )
