The Birthday Just in case you didn’t know Paradise Point Sailing Club is 4 years old as of last Friday ! It only seems like yesterday that a group of people came to me to see if I could help them start a sailing club dedicated to promoting the sport of sailing for kids and their families. As usual, not fully thinking the consequences through, I immediately said yes and then the forms & paperwork began ...... and is still going on, in ever increasing amounts. But you know what, its been worth every minute especially to see the smiles on the children's faces as they learn and have fun on the water.

Hi everyone,
Well finally we had some decent weather on Sunday for not only Juniors but also racing . We only had a small group of Juniors in the first lesson who sailed in 3 to 5 knot winds but unfortunately only one person ( Charlie ) turned up for the second class. We assumed that the conditions kept most people away . Charlie helped with rigging the 470 and then we sent him off for a short sail when the wind came back. Weather wise, it was a very interesting day with storms building in the west and then splitting before it reached us and going north and south with a final decision on racing only being made around 12.45 . I have never heard so many extreme weather warnings over the VHF and I must admit it had Ted and I constantly watching the heavens for the first sign of bad weather. The wind on the day started at around 4/5 knots and by the end of the race reached 15, with the first boat home being Maurie in just over 1hr and 40 min. Lastly, don’t forget to invite all your friends to the try sailing fundraiser on the 16th of December. You can get hold of the flier HERE. Lets' make it a big day and don’t forget all proceeds raised on the day will go to the children's ward of Gold Coast Hospital . Good Sailing! John Murphy President/Sailing manager Hi Everyone, Mother nature did it again over the weekend with Saturday raining and no wind and Sunday wind and waves increasing to over thirty knots ( check wind graph ) prompting cancellation of Juniors and Club racing. Hopefully the weather will be more agreeable next weekend (18.11.12) with the possibility of holding two races on the day to make up for last weekend . I will discuss this option with the racers on Sunday to see what they think. The only positive thing to come from the weather extremes is that the 470 is getting closer to completion thanks to the volunteers: Rob McNeill ( Sanding and fitting ) Dom Monaco ( fitting in the bow to undo nuts and loosing tools ) George Morton ( long skinny arms to reach inside the hull to put the washers and nuts on ) Tianna Bowles ( rigging with confusion ) We would like to thank our Local Division 3 Council Member Cameron Caldwell for including us in his recipient list for local community grants.
We were successful in receiving a cheque for $2,700.00 which is being used to purchase new PFD's, rigging rope and a six boat Tera trailer. Racing started with blue skies and breeze of 6/8 knots predominantly from the East (certainly a change from the 25/35 knots of the previous weekend). The fleet of 16 boats went for a run up to the top of Sovereign Island where a triangular course was set with increasing current and inconsistent winds. Just what everyone hates.
John Musgrave and Chris Connell (new boat and good to see him back racing) had a very close race all the way to the finish line, with Chris getting over the line 1 second in front of John . The rest of the fleet followed in hot pursuit. Well, as hot as you can get in 6 knots . |
