Hi everyone , yes Santa is nearly here, only 9 sleeps to go and lets hope everyone has a great Christmas with friends , Family and of course good weather . The club will be running Juniors this Sunday and it will start up again on Sunday the 10th of January . The club will be partially open from the 28th for members to gain access to their boats an hopefully me going for some much needed sailing therapy.

8.30am Juniors

With overcast conditions and rain we didn't expect anyone to come along, but as usual we were wrong with five sailors showing up for a go. The winds were basically from the south around 6/10 knots, so conditions were OK for everyone to get some practice in, but at 10 o'clock in came the southerly change and it went from 6/10 to 20 plus in a matter of minutes. so as everyone was just capsizing we pulled the pin and cancelled the session . One good point was the return of India who has been away for over twelve months but it was obvious from the start that she hadn't forgot how to sail and even capsize.

Sailing Camp

We held a camp this week as well and with perfect conditions with sunny skies and e/s/e winds at around 3/6 knots both days were just right to teach some new sailors and some more experienced ones more sailing skills . Standouts were Jackson who really sailed well including an excellent windward work up to Sovereign, plus Grace who not only sailed well but was outstanding in the capsize department with her equally skilled crew , I gave up in the end trying to stop them and just let them go . Actually everyone improved in their sailing including Tom who actually started sailing straight at the marks and even fixed his main sheet tangles . Casey helped both days , but our other assistant failed to turn up but was seen in his tinny at one stage , apparently he was sick or something must have a bout of Tinnyitus , yep I made it up Michael .

Lastly I finally came through with my promise to teach Casey Dallas and Sienna how to sail a dinghy with us rigging the 420 after the camp finished yesterday and heading out on the Broadwater to practice tacking and gybing as a team and then headsail and main trimming . I ended up getting off and letting them go on their own with me following in the powerboat and I think we might have turned a corner , great work guys ! And we wont even mention Dallas breaking stuff and then being bitten three times by the hernia ? ( its Andrew's laser which is on the heaviest dolly )

Additional Notes

Racing will be back in early February, dates to follow.

Hi everyone, instead of our normal Sunday Juniors Program we held our annual Try Sailing Day which is also a fundraiser for the Gold Coast University Hospital with all funds raised on the day going to the hospital.

Try Sailing Day 2015

After a wild week of winds it turned out a reasonable day on Sunday, with winds from the S/E around 10 knots it was near perfect conditions for new people to come down and help us support the hospital while having a go at sailing .
It was great to see many of our Sunday Junior sailors bring their friends down and take them for a sale and by the look of it everyone had a great deal of fun . There were even powerboat and Jetski rides so there was plenty of activity on the water .
Yes, they did rig the 14 skiff, but it spent most of its sailing time on its side ? Tianna and I had a bet that they would either capsize it on the shore or within ten metres of the shore, and I won, yep ten metres and they were over for number one of many .
I have to say in their defence, she did have a major leak inside the cockpit, but then again if they hadn't capsized it 10 metres from the shore she wouldn't have gotten water in her.
Will brought the A class cat down which proved very popular with everyone wanting a ride, even my Grandaughter had a go !

Hi Everyone , you guessed it , 1 more week closer to Christmas , where did the time go ? Firstly, I hope everyone is inviting all their friends down on Sunday for our Try Sailing Fundraiser so the they can help us raise much needed funds for the Gold Coast University Hospital to help buy much needed equipment .
Following the Try Sail we are also having our annual members and friends Xmas party so hang around and have some fun .

8.30am Juniors

Well with absolutely stifling heat conditions early, everyone was sweating while rigging the boats so it was a pleasure to not only get on the water but also in the water . Luckily the wind came up from the n/e at around 6 knots so that everyone could practice their tacking and even some gybing, and who cares if you capsized while gybing at least the water was refreshing . The sad news was that despite their best efforts the crew didn't beat the most people on a boat capsize record which still stands at 16. Sundays effort was 13, but much fun was had by all even Me and Tianna .

10.30am Juniors

This group was much smaller that the previous week, probably because of school and xmas holidays fast approaching , but despite the small numbers everyone went out in what was now winds around 8/10 knots and increasing . We firstly practiced tacking and gybing despite some protests about gybing, and then we sent everyone off down to the green marks for a bit of distance sailing as it was just a perfect reaching course . Ollie had his camera on board and posted it on Facebook, even the capsize ! Well done Ollie .

Open Bic

With Jonah turning up still asleep, it was decided that maybe he shouldn't sail, so it was only Pat and Dallas lining up with the Adults for the marathon . Although the course was a lot shorter, they still battled to complete the course with winds reaching at least 25 knots making especially the upwind tough going . Pat gave it his best shot but finally had to be towed home, and even though Dallas made it back he was exhausted , so much so that once he got his boat up on the grass he collapsed beside it . Again well done boys for giving it a go !

Adult Racing

As I said in the Bic section, the winds increased to a good 25 knots with some vicious bullets around the whole course . John Brown led the fleet all the way to the west cardinal in the deep hole but apparently capsized in the gybe and lost the lead , it would have been very disappointing after such a good sail but that's sailing for you I didn't even get that far capsizing after running aground about 200 mtrs from the x mark . Everyone agreed that the work from the west cardinal in the deep hole back to the club was absolutely punishing combining a rushing tide 25 knot winds and shifts and bullets all the way . At least we finished the racing year on a memorable sail .

Additional Notes

2016 Racing : I have not yet finalised the new calendar, but it looks like so far that we will probably start on the 7th of February and as soon as I have completed the new calendar I will post it on the website.

Cu you all on Sunday at the Xmas Party
