Hi Everyone , I hope everyone is surviving with our current covid rules in queensland but at least we are still open for business unlike NSW , I have family down there and yes they are doing it tough but as they say it has to be done so good luck NSW ! We will be having a movie crew in Paradise Point in a couple of weeks and you will see plenty of Marques and trucks in the park next to the club and plenty of people wandering around the club as they are using our outside area for catering and equipment storage . So whats the movie about well its about Jessica Watsons solo around the world sailing adventure which is ironic as I used to be her sailing instructor in her junior years when I worked at SYC she is a great person and has a great family so I hope the movie does well.. I just want to also mention the volunteers in the canteen they do a great job every week and I think they deserve a nod for their efforts at keeping our club financial.
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
OK yes it was a bit nippy early but with our usual blue skied start to the day it soon warmed up well on land at least the water temp was a different matter yep still cold even with a wetsuit on . Tristan was back from suspension so capsizing was back on the menu and if you want to know why he was suspended you will have to as Tristan . Harvey and Reece were first in and were soon rigged and ready as was Tristan and with a n/n/w wind around 4 knots yes 4 knots no the predicted 20 knots Jason set a reaching course nearly all the way to ephriam which had Reece a bit worried at first but he was soon sailing around both marks with the other guys and just cruising . Tristan was ok at first then his nickname ( captain capsize ) took over and was constantly capsizing until he got too cold and had to be towed in . There was also a different boat out there with some of the youth sailors giving a two sail boat a go and they all did quite well especially after they shut the bailer ?
10.30 am Youth Training
Well this group had a mix as well with Jade , Daniel and Taylah deciding to sail the pacer while ross and abbs sailed lasers . The wind was still light so it was basically a bit of cruising before we start getting ready for Yepoon . With Jade,Dan and Taylah it meant that Scott and Charlie had a chance to do the latest Open Bic rig upgrades on Jades and Daniels Bics now all we have to do is show them how to use them ! What upgrades well they cna now adjust the outhaul easier and they have changed the block system on the cunningham and vang , I found the upgrades interesting as when we first got the boats we realised we needed to change those fittings but once Open Bic australia saw them they made us change them back just like our longer tiller extensions which are now legal as well , I suppose its true good changes does take time .
Finally HAPPY BIRTHDAY ABBY ROAKE FOR LAST MONDAY !!!

1.30 PM open racing ;
we only had a small group for racing as we were missing most of our youth group due to a sleep over at abbys for her birthday and as most parents know they dont sleep they just stay up all night and end up tired and cranky by lunch time the next day , as soon as I saw them all in the morning I could see they werent going to make the day out. With westerlies now prevelant we set a course starting at the top of ephriam and a turning mark over toward runners , it didnt sound to hard a course but with a combination of wind shifts and 10/12 knot bullets it was certainly a challenge . The start was exciting with heaps of wind and everyone coming in on a reach but they were all outdone by Ross who cracked the line right on the hooter and was doing well in the 4.7until his rudder pin popped out at the gybe mark causing him to capsize , It got to much for John B and Maurie and the pulled out lap three leaving Greg Tom Matt and Ross , Greg got away early with Tom close behind until right in front of us he capsized he did a perfect tack to go back up the course hiked out in a good gust and as soon as he did that the wind just stopped and over he went so yes typical westerlies . Greg came in first with Tom second and Matt third but they were all shot duck as it was definitely hard work on the day.

Hi Everyone , Iam writing this weeks newsletter from home because its to cold to go to the club with the outside temperature only 8 degrees not counting the wind chill factor ! With the news of queenslands successful olympic bid for 2032 I was just wondering if one of our present or future young sailors might be there representing Australia who knows and what a feather in our cap that would be and what an experience that would be for them and their family.
8,30 am Sunday Juniors
With strong westerly winds predicted the same as saturday we as usual didnt expect much of a turn up from our juniors but as usual the conditions were not as predicted with roughly northerly winds around 6 knots and blue skies . Harvey and Reece were first to arrive and soon had bics and teras out rigging them reece was even practicing his figure eight knots with Mum . Ross did the briefing as part of his practice towards his instructors qualification and did quite well and we soon had everyone on the water with a nice reach set up across the waterway . Prior to heading out we had a talk with Reece and Aidan about steering at the course buoys as in recent weeks they were missing them completely and with an incoming tide they would end up under the bridge again , but they both must have listened well as they were sailing right too the buoys especially Reece who really sailed well in fact the best I have ever seen him sail so well done Reece . Without Tristan around there were no accidental capsizes as apparently from what Harvey told everyone at the briefing he was in trouble at home but we will wait and get the full story next week .
10.30 am Youth Training
With everyone back from manly youth week we had a sit down and talk about everyones experiences and in general everyone said it was an eye opener with constantly changing conditions from light to 15 knots and totally different start sequences . The groups were not as big as previous years due to covid restrictions especially in NSW but they still had good numbers in each division especially in optis and sabots . The laser group complained about very light winds but still managed to get around the course , must have been all that light wind training Charlie and I made them do right guys? and apparently the winds came in on the last day so at least they could generate some speed . Jade in the bic was up against some stiff competition in Jonah and Addy both x p.p.s.c. sailors and managed to get second in girls and third overall which is a great result for someone who was always very shy and didnt want to sail too far from shore ! and after watching her Daniel has decided to enter next year so look out everyone he is really keen to catch up and enjoy the competition.
1.30 pm open racing
With conditions settling in with basically west/ north / west winds around 4/10 knots and an increasing incoming tide we set a start line in front of crab island and the A mark over at the boat ramp near runners then a third mark at the top of ephriam island . The start was good with everyone generally behaving themselves with Steve and Abby having a blinder start . The sail to A mark was really difficult with the current really affecting everyone but the worst was the pile driving barge which decided to motor through the fleet forcing everyone to take avoiding action ( yes commercial has right of way over sail ) then on the second run back from A ( downwind ) virtually everyone didnt see the gust as they approached B and there were quite a few capsizes and a bit of carnage with the worst outcome being Taylah who was going well up to then but after finally getting going again in 4.7 just didnt have the speed to catch up but at least she kept going. The finish line was set at the A mark so it was again very difficult to get over the line as Tom found out when he thought he had it in the bag against Greg and fell into a hole about three boat lengths from the line and just barely ghosted of the line in front of Greg JUST! ALL IN ALL A GOOD DAYS SAILING.
Upcoming ; Yepoon September

Hi everyone , its been a couple of weeks since we had a newsletter mainly due to my recent illness which slowed me done somewhat but Iam on the improve and working toward full fitness again . Looking at what is happening in nsw with their new outbreak we have to keep our fingers crossed in qland that we wont suffer the same lockdown as they have , Paradise Point sailing club and its operations are controlled by GCCC Queensland Health , Dept sport and recreation as our main controllers so we are constantly monitoring their websites and emails to make sure we comply . As of last sunday we now have both sign on and phone scan capabilities so that we comply with current rules so if you are entering the club please remember to register at the front doors .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors ;
Well with the temperature close to single digits we are only getting a few takers for the early class but the boys are really keen to get their boats rigged especially Tristan and Harvey who both seem to have improved in their sailing since the mid winter cup and are now starting to hike out in their Bics and generally sail much better so all that sailing over two days must have helped .even though some of the sailing was just drifting!. Reece alex and aidan are also improving with with them now sailing around the reaching course and getting closer to the marks . Finally it has been decided that Tristan should have his own nickname and you guessed it its captain capsize because he accidentally ? capsizes every session well at least he is enjoying his sailing.
10.30 Youth Training :
Well this group has had a busy couple of weeks with midwinter cup and manly youth week where everyone put all that training to the test from sailing in virtually no wind to good winds at manly on the second day .Each time these boys and girls hit the water they are introduced to even more sailing skills and its starting to show in their on water efforts . Our midwinter cup fleet was relatively small buy previous years but they all got to sail in much bigger groups at Manly where starts were critical especially in the light conditions but from what I hear everyone really enjoyed sailing against other lasers who they will probably see at yepoon in october . Our lone representative in the Bic Skiff Jade absolutely excelled herself getting second in female and third overall and although the fleet was small by previous years due to covid 19 restrictions she competed against two top line sailors in Jonah and Addy and really showed her skills.
1.30 pm Open Racing ;
With our youth sailors away at manly on the 4th of july it was up to the adults to fly the flag with ten boats lining up for the start . Conditions were good with winds from the s/s/e at around 10/15 knots and with a start at the canal then a down at runners then a run up to the top of ephriam to round out the abc Ben Oneill was soon in the lead and absolutely flying with Peter behind him and Matt scooting along in third yes Matt ? as he was absolutely flying along in a borrowed boay ( mine ) . Unfortunately for Ben you guessed it he capsized in a gust at the top of ephriam and stuck the mast in the mud so by the time he got it up he was nearly last and decided to retire but boy he was flying earlier . Matts son Felix got the capsize record which we think was ten but we did loose count but by the tenth he was shot so Charlie jumped on board and sailed his boat home . John B and Adrian also pulled out as the conditions got stronger so we ended up with 6 boats over the line including Matt who actually drifted over in reverse having done a 360 penalty right at the finish and stalled the boat so he just drifted backwards over the line four fourth right behind Greg . Last Sunday as there was only three turned up for racing we decided to cancel and the guys including Jade ,and Daniel just went out for some practice in around 12/15 knots with the occassional gust as Jade found out on a couple of the upwinds ending up with a couple of swims but she kept on going until she just got too cold and even Dan said it was cold and he normally doesnt feel it !
