Hi Everyone , After a great effort by our volunteers with our maintenance day it is great to be able to find what Iam looking for especially on the parts rack , OK a few things were hard to find at first mainly as they were no longer on the floor so I had to start looking up to find things . All in all it was a great effort from everyone especially in general tidynesss , now all we have to do is see how long it will last .
8.30 Sunday Juniors :
With the weather absolutely perfect especially after a windy saturday ( 30knots ) and with our solid group of early morning sailors keen to get going even if a couple were woried about their first Bic sail we set everyone off in perect w/n/w winds around 6 knots . There was as usual the occassional collission even with the safety boats but all in all everyone went well and after a few laps tacking only we pushed everyone to do some gybing as it was perfect conditions . The ood person pulled out early due to cold and toilet breaks but generally everyone returned and truly had a great sail .
10.30 Sunday Juniors ;
By the time this group got on the water the winds had increased and become a bit gusty creating a bit of a challenge for the younger ones like Addy when the gusts came through which were a bit sharp in their intensity . Parker was back because as he said the water is getting warmer and had agreat sail even Abby is genuinely improving , must be facing forward and rolling your tacks right abb,s ? We set a course accross the front of the club at first then as we discussed in the classroom earlier we did downwind and closehauled practice . The upwinds were a challenge but everyone gave it their best shot with Abby really giving it a go after a few overpoints early , Addy being the smallest did really struggle even with Caseys guidance but at least sh had a crack .
Open Racing 1.30 pm :
By the time for racing came around the winds had turned more north then n/e so pete and I set the race starting in the deep hole with two laps up to the club then a long lap to the top half of soverign which of course by the time the started that lap the wind had died back and the outgoing tide started to increase making it a tough slog to the top mark . Luckily for everyone Pete said not to obey nav marks otherwise we would all have been out there until dark as it truly was a test . Greg started well and was never headed with Tom only 50 seconds behind after 1.4 hrs racing . Casey had an early shocker against Pat who built a long lead but with a never say die attitude Casey finished less than a minute behind after at one stage being over 5 minutes behind . Charlie pulled out at the start with a jammed main sheet and Declan pulled out late due to feeling crook .
Opps I almost forgot sneaky Steve finished third in the adults . Simone had a great battle with a tweed sailor Kate who came up for the day .

Upcoming ;

School Holiday sailing camps on mon / tue 18/19 and 25/26 of sept  booking essential forms available from club office Note we have also put aside the 28th and 29th which is a thu and fri as a back up in case one of the early camps is cancelled .

Hi Everyone , Well it finally happened after weeks of light winds perfect for learner sailors mother nature decided to make last Sunday a bit of a challenge with gusty west based winds making life interesting for morning juniors .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors ; With 12 junior sailors turning up for this lesson we spent some time after rigging discussing what everyone should expect wind wise with a predominately westerly wind pattern which was periods of consistent winds and the occasional gust ? Most importantly I stressed no gybes due to the winds being the strongest that most of our juniors had ever experienced in their short sailing careers . So what happened ? you guessed it most everyone went out and gybed so their were quite a few boats going around in circles and a bit of panic amongst some of the sailors . We did bring a few crews back in and slowly went through the tacking process until we got everyones confidence back and then allowed them to sail in close just for fun . The best on the day was Charlie who with her crew and the safety crews help sailed around the course without any drama,s so well done Charlie >
10.30 Sunday Juniors ; By 10.30 the winds had become even more gusty and with only Addy and Kaleb rigging up we took our time setting up and would you believe the wind turned s/s/e and settled in around 10 knots .
Addy was a bit nervous but with her dad and I following she slowly gained confidence and managed to sail across to the other side of the broadwater and back handling both the gusts and the lulls well even if she was scowling at us for making her go so far . Kaled went of with Dallas in a laser and aftrer a few laps with Dal Kaled took over himself and promptly capsized but he did manage to get his boat up and with Dallas following him around the course giving instruction he did very well for his first true laser sail .
Open Racing ; Back next weekend
Maintenance day Saturday 19/8/17 ; Firstly thanks to everyone who turned up and helped us tidy the place up before the summer rush Dallas Casey Charlie Andrew Peter Greg Tom Addy Tina the doherty family Caiden and his dad . Casey reset the whole storage shelf , Tom and Greg replaced the verandah posts and fixed the shelves in the canteen , Andrew , Peter and Charlie worked on Public nuisance , Addy and Caiden painted , Tina cleaned the canteen , Brendan and Dallas sorted the mezzanine and all the kids pitched in with the sail loft and the doherty family worked on cleaning shower repairs and general maintenance and me ? well I re manufactured some steel shelves and generally helped out .
Rescue boat Endorsement : With the weather getting a bit rough it was perfect for this course which involves everything from radio procedures , first aid to on water recovery and rescue training . The group included Glen Casey Pat Dallas Glen and Charlie who each took turns at each safety procedure with overall good results with everyone now having a better understanding of what can happen and the appropiate responses .

Hi Everyone , Well looking at the latest weather it looks like winter has gone with even the water temperature already on the rise it made for another awesome day on the water on Sunday .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors ;
What an absolutely perfect start to the day with mild conditions with blue skies , smooth water but just lacking a decent wind early .
We gave two of our junior sailors a challenge on Sunday with Ava and Mason having their first try in the Open Bic and yes they were both very tentative at first but with some support from the Instructors they soon got the hang of it and joined Addy in cruising around the course or was that drifting ? Finally though the wind did pick up from the s/e so at least everyone had some time sailing in a decent wind . Addy even found a thong which she kept on the boat because she said that she could talk to it ??? I just nodded and drove off after that statement what else could I do .
Its also great to see everyone pitching in in derigging boats at the end as it certainly saves us in pack up time at the end of the day !
10.30am Sunday Juniors; With the wind now settled in from the s/e around 4/6 knots we set everyone off around a couple of buoys out the front but everyone soon tired of that and we sent them off to the yellow down at the canal . Abbey is definitely improving her upwind and sailed well on the day Ben tells me he loves the Taz but it was a bit of a struggle apparently dads going to have a talk about apparent wind RIGHT DAD ?. Dec and Jonah just flew around the course with me grabbing Jonah for some gybing practice ( he definitely needs some after a later incident while racing ) and Dec practicing for his first open race in the afternoon .
1.30 PM Open Race ;
With the winds settling in from the e/s/e and a change of tide right in the middle of the racing we set a start over by the canal with the top mark just north of the special mark above crab . After an early incident just before the start it was a hotly contested line with a few yells of up! up!and Casey trying a port start which saw her and Andrew having to come back as she pushed Andrew over early but at least he missed her as he was being crowded from behind . The incident I mentioned was Jonah clocking himself with the boom in a gybe and unfortunately it wasnt his Bic it was the 420 so it really hurt but true to form after a quick check by Dad he was off again . Roger lead from start to finish with Steve second and Tom third who was just slow and couldnt figure out why until he pulled his centreboard up at the end and found a great hunk of seaweed on it ( know the feeling Tom ) Ben in jetboat found out that you should double check your rigging especially when you jam the outhaul in the boom cleat !Even Adrian in his first race on his new laser found out that you shouldnt let go of the steering in a gybe as bad things happen .
Upcoming ;  This weekend on Saturday we are having a gear and building maintenance day starting at 8am so if you would like to lend a hand just turn up on the day . Sunday as there is no racing we are holding a rescue boat familiarization afternoon starting at 1.00 pm with general safety procedures and some boat driving ( license not required ) we do these every year so that our volunteers are able to lend a hand when sailing is on

Hi Everyone , Sorry Iam a bit late this week with the club news letter  honestly totally forgot to write up last weeks events so anyway lets see how the memory is .

8.30 am Sunday Juniors ;
With westerly winds predicted I was looking forward to a perfect morning for the juniors to practice their skills .
As usual the day dawned with blue skies and N/W/N winds around 6 knots and maybe the occassional change to west just to confuse people .
 After some innitial towing and pushing boats back up to the sailing area in front of the club the winds settled in and everyone just cruised around the course . There were the usual collisions luckily at low speed where people werent looking when tacking right Taine? Charlie improves each week as does Ava and really everyone on the water as conditions are always very light giving everyone time to learn to not only keep the sail working but to work on the innitial challenge of steering .
10 .30 am Sunday Juniors ; With the winds now up around  six knots but with a rushing outgoing tide it was a challenge for everyone to sail their course but with a bit of coaching everyone managed to master the conditions . Caleb in the bic was concentrating on the marks in an effort to show me that he can sail well enough to jump into a laser and if he continues with last Sundays effort he is not far away from a swap . Ollie went well with his new haircut in his bic and Addy just continues to go forward with the help of her coach Casey . Declan is definitely up to giving racing a go very soon and after speaking with Jonah we have decided to set a course specifically designed for open bic in the 1.30 racing as he needs the on water practice as he is off to Yepoon to race there soon .
Open Racing 1.30 pm ; With the winds swinging now to the n/e at around 10 knots Peter and I decided to give everyone a racie in the soverign channel . We set a mark at the top of Soverign and a mark at the top of Ephriam and the start line just north of runners . With the last of the outgoing tide it was perfect for a start with everyone getting a good start in a close bunch . Charlie learnt that in sundays conditions its better to come at the line with speed that way you dont get swamped by everyone else . Casey and Pat had a good race with a couple of lead swaps before she managed to get a break and come over the line first with Pat second , Charlie third and Ryan fourth with Brendan stuck in the middle in the radial .
Tom got away again with Greg  and try as he might just couldnt bridge the gap coming in second  and John T third . Russell was doing well but stopped to check a crab pot or he hit the sand back or depending which story sounds the best and the dark horse Steve just cruising through . Simone says she is coming to grips with my boat and sailed faster than the week before .
Upcoming ;
Maintenance day on Saturday the 19th of August
starting a 8.00 am . We use these days to fix damaged gear on the boats and carry out general maintenance on the club so if you can spare some time come along and help keep our club active

Hi Everyone looking for the latest news from Paradise Point Sailing Club including what happened last week and whats coming up for the club  for the rest of 2017 .
Sunday Juniors 8.30 am ;
Yes it was the usual cold start to the day especially around 6am when the temp was 8 degrees but as usual the sun was bright and with clear blue skies it was just a great start to the day . With again a few newbies having their first try at sailing mixing in with a team of regulars we ended up with seventeen sailors on the water reaching across the broadwater in perfect northerly winds . It was awesome seeing everyone out there practicing not only their tacks but also their gybes  oh yes Taine fell out again ! and Ava stepped up and sailed the TAZ withe Aspen who actually is louder than Ava but I truly have to congratulate Ava for trying the bigger boat Oh and how did she go at her first Taz sail well she couldnt stop smiling . Thank you to all our regular sailors who with no prompting take out the new sailors for their first sail and show them the ropes and keep them safe .
Sunday Juniors 10.30 ;
With our usual bunch of lasers including declan who has been away for two weeks with the flu plus Addy having her first go in her Bic in 10.30 class we set a reaching course in winds around 6/12 knots so that everyone could not only practice their tacks but also their gybes , it was a bit gusty at times but everyone handled the conditions well although apparently Addy needs  a bit more gybing practice according to her instructor Casey but Iam sure she will nail it in the end . Even the birthday girl Abby managed to keep her boat upright must have been letting the main off in the gusts right Abbs ? it sure beats capsizing in the cold water .There is even a rumour that Declan will be transfering to racing very soon well done Dec !
Open Racing 1.30 pm
With the winds settling from the n/e and a nearly full tide Peter and I set a course starting at Runners entry with a windward leeward and triangle course up our channel as far as the clubhouse which really tested the sailors due to knocks and shifts on the course . James bolted at the start with Greg ( back from O/S ) not being able to make any headway at catching him around the course  but of course mother nature can be cruel and yes you guessed it on the last lap he sailed into a knock and allowed Greg to catch him with greg sneaking over the line just in front . The Youths was just as competitive with Charlie right there at the start followed by Dallas then Casey and Brendan ( radial ) After rounding the top mark casey managed to overhaul Dallas for the lead which he promptly regained at the bottom mark with a buoy room manouvre but on the next downwind Casey overtook him again and kept the lead until the finish line with Charlie third sailing very well actually probably the fastest I have ever seen him sail in the lighter conditions and Brendan who continues to improve not a very distant fourth .

Upcoming ;
Club Maintenance day Saturday 19th of August starting at 8.00am
maintenance will be on the building , club boats and equipment so if you can spare some time let us know and we will surely be able to keep you all occupied ! There will be a work list available at the club this weekend .
Sunday 20th of August ; Rescue boat crew endorsement , this covers the operation of the safety boats including crew response / duties / safety management and on water recovery drills . These activities are for anyone who is keen to become part of our boat crews and you dont need a lisence to become part of the team so if you think you would like to have a go just let John know in the office .
