Hi Everyone,
As you all know there was no sailing this weekend due to our building renovations taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

The Roof;
Stage one Saturday;
Well what a job,  just removing the roof brought forth the deepening mystery of how the roof sheets were still attached to the frame and also how the frame was still attached together. The more we removed the worse the rust was but despite the poor state of the beams they as usual refused to give up easily fighting us all the way.

Once all the old frame was removed it was then time to repair the upright posts by welding plates and sleeves on tops and bottoms and during this process we also found the mounting beam across the club wall was just hanging there so yes that was re bolted as well. Not mentioning any names but two people spent so much time on one corner its apparently going to be named M&M corner with suitable signage to come.

Stage two Sunday;
After temporarily putting up two sections on Saturday they were pulled back down for more measuring and discussion on Sunday morning by the design team who were all quite happy measuring drawing and discussing everything! While this was happening Aidan and I the W&FS TEAM (WELD AND FIX STUFF) continued welding and fixing anything we thought might possibly move when it shouldn’t. Followed by painting all the stuff we stopped moving. With steady progress the frame was completed and then it was time for the Colourbond sheets to go back on and off course the wind came up to around 20knots just in time for this job to begin but thankfully with all the volunteers pitching in each section was raised and fitted with clockwork precision (almost). I was slightly out on the timing of the thunderstorm which included rain hail and lightning and  arrived about ten minutes early so we could complete the painting  but did complete the roof.

There were many funny moments with musical power leads, cordless drills, grinders, ladders and tools taking place, it was definitely a good idea once you had what you needed for the job not to put it down because it was gone in a flash. Many people overcame the aversion to heights or just ignored it and climbed ladders and scaffold for two days and I bet like me they are feeling their leg muscles today. There was also a certain school teacher who after telling us of this new welder that he had just received and went and picked up from work only to find when he returned to the club that he had forgotten the inverter as it was a industrial wired unit which didn’t fit 240v, its amazing what a grinder can do to a power plug .

Finally both Pieter Verstoep and I would like to thank MARK, MARK, ANDREW, ALAN, ROGER, REECE, AIDAN,  JOHN, DAVID, PAUL, DYLAN, LACHY, GEORGE and their families for their support and tireless efforts over the two days with everyone constantly pitching in and trying their hand at new skills, give yourselves a large pat on the back because without all your help and Ideas this project would not have been possible. Everyone when you come to the club next come inside the cage and look up at what this group achieved its bloody amazing.

PS: Good luck and safe sailing to George and Tara who are travelling to Yepoon this week to compete in the Queensland titles catch you on the water next weekend .

Hi Everyone,
After a slow start on Saturday where I cancelled sailing due to predicted storms that didn’t arrive? We followed it up with a absolutely perfect Sunday with sunshine and reasonable wind.

We are in the final preparation stage for the replacement of the caged area roof beams this weekend with the steel ordered and delivered on Friday so lets hope barring any unforeseen problems we will have a new strong and not rusty roof for the next weekend.

Please remember that the club will have no sailing over next weekend due to safety concerns while building works are being carried out.

Sunday Juniors 8.30 class;

With 10 budding Junior sailors turning up for Juniors in the morning and the wind speed around 6 knots it was a great day for everyone to practice both steering and crewing. A special pat on the back to Riley and Ryan (still cant tell them apart) who spent some time with me working on their tacking as they were facing backwards coming out of their tacks so consequently they were pointing in the wrong direction and despite a shaky start they both managed to nail it and were off with the rest of the fleet.

Also thanks Dallas for taking young Maraya out its always good when our more experienced sailors volunteer their help.

Sunday Juniors 10.30 class ;

Again as like the previous Sunday we had 13 students turn up for sailing (lucky I repaired another Tera) with winds swinging to the s/e at around 5/8 knots it was a perfect opportunity for everyone to practice not only tacking but gybing with a few early swims in the gybes but with also some stand outs in Patrick , Mark ( excellent) Lilly and India (two up) plus Dallas and with a bit of coaching Jonah, everyone else all improved greatly even Nick who doesn’t like gybing.

The sailing was so impressive that I have suggested to Mark, Patrick, Dallas and the two girls that they should move over to racing at 1.30 pm as their skills are good enough to be up to the challenge.

Well done everyone .

Open Bic Racing;

For the race team we only had two sailors in Dylan (CT)and Chip Charlie out there as Sienna had a concert and Luka had boat troubles which I promised his dad I wouldn’t mention the details!

Due to Aidan being off with the flu I had the two boys out there working on starts and upwind and broad reaching with a bit of a struggle at first with both boys not sheeting on enough up wind and sheeting on too much on the broad reach, but after a few goes they were going well upwind and faster on the broad reach. I have to mention a couple of things one being Dylan's tacks after the b/ reach were very ordinary and with Charlie he has to keep the sail on despite his fingers hurting. All in all boys a good effort as you will need those skills for Port Stephens.

Club Racing;

I don’t know what happened but we had a very small turnout for racing with only 8 boats on the water  last weeks tide must have scared them off except for Andrew who blew his knee while tacking a 30 footer on Saturday. It was good to see all the boys out there (Lachy, George , Will and Oscar) in 4.7 lasers with Will just squeezing George out at the finish line and Lachy squeezing Oscar out at the finish also.

Top place went to Roger (light weight light conditions) with Peter Fell second and Pieter Verstoep third in my boat as his was stuck in the garage. Its the first time my boat has had a radial on board I hope it wasn’t too disappointed I will have to take it out with the full rig on just to let it know it was a one off.

No racing now for two weeks with the Spring Series starting on the 6th of October with the dates to be posted on the website this week. As you all may have seen we have secured a part of the QLA traveller series in March next year and work is still under way for any Open Bic River Series to hopefully start in the new year as well.

CU all in two weeks unless you are helping with the roof over the weekend

Hi Everyone,
Well another perfect weekend for sailing , blue skies and good winds just a pity about the tide!

Michelle and I went for a sail to the deep hole on Saturday and had some great reaches but then we had to work our way home into the wind and strong current, it was surely an upwind test for us both and I have to admit the legs were a bit sore on Sunday. Don't forget everyone that the club will not be sailing on the weekend of the 21st & 22nd Sept due to the replacement of our caged area roof.

Sunday Juniors 8.30:

Sunday Juniors was held in winds of around 6/9 knots with a nice long reach set up for both the experienced sailors and the newbies of which there was one more junior girl sailor, a thank you goes to young Alex Caban who took a couple of new sailors out and showed them the ropes, Alex never complains when asked to perform these duties and we do appreciate it. We are now getting a good number of girls coming along on Sundays so who knows we might have the next budding Jessica Watson come through the ranks. The water is definitely getting warmer with a few more accidental? Capsizes, especially Taylor who has to work on the accidental bit!

Sunday Juniors 10.30:

Ten thirty class is definitely starting to build up with 12 level three and above sailors out there sailing around the course. Despite some complaining (India) about the course have a gybe mark in it everyone went well with a definite improvement in everyone Gybing, tacking and bearaway skills. The standouts were Patrick, India and Lilly, Flynn and again Jonah who despite being the smallest has certainly got a lot of determination to master the sport. There was a lot of capsizing (on purpose  at the end of the session due again to water temperature and I think a large piece of excitement at how well everyone went including avoiding the powerboats and jetskis who generally kept well clear.

Open Bic :

Bic racing didn’t start well with Dylan finding a new way to injure himself on Friday by bending his two middle fingers back trying to catch a football. So we had the usual suspects at the start line, Sienna (headache) Charlie chips Bratten and Luka who all managed to get the course right with a close reach to A then a reach to B and then a run to C. I am told by Aidan (coach 0) that everything went well after the initial yelling about sailing at the buoy and hike out and also pull the sail on! Gee doesn’t that sound familiar. Anyway, good racing was had by all and I will have the latest results up on the notice board for the weekend .

Club Racing:

Two races were held on Sunday with only a small fleet of 11 boats lining up at the start, Mark even managed to go ashore and replace his boom and still finish about 4 minutes behind the fleet in race one other than that the race  was pretty uneventful with a basic windward leeward return course up to the club and back.

Race two however was a lot tougher with everyone not realising the strength of the current with one of the latest starts I have seen in a while with the last competitor taking three minutes to get over the line. It was definitely not a day for the windsurfer (Paul) with the current playing havoc with his upwind, when he decided to pull out after an hour he did look worn out .

With the ever increasing current Ted and I decided to shorten the course just opposite Runaway Bay Marina as everyone still had to legs to go and then wind was dying. I don’t think anyone complained !

Results;

1 Mark Brown

2 Andrew Todd

3 Peter Fell

Hi Everyone,
What a week for the club, we have been accepted to hold a round of the QLA traveller series in March next year and we are also in the process of organising 4 other clubs to run a River Series for the Open Bic Class. We were also successful in a club grant to purchase more safety equipment and fuel, alas we missed out on the big one but we will definitely try again in the next round.

We will be removing the caged area roof on the 21st / 22nd Sept and replacing all the beams that are badly rusted with new galvanised beams, the club will not have sailing that weekend due to the nature of the work we will be carrying out.

Sunday Juniors 8.30 class;

Again we had some new potential sailors come along and try out with young Murraya going out with Sienna 1 for her first sail, thanks Sienna for showing her the ropes including how to capsize on your own! Conditions were moderate with winds from the s/e at around 8/10 knots so there was definitely no problems with lack of wind as in the last couple of weeks, there were some tangles and running into sandbanks (low tide) and each other but all in all they all went well in their first windy day. The funniest team was Sienna 2 with Tayla and Lachlan (newbies) who screamed the most but kept turning around and going back out again, both Peiter and I haven't laughed so much in ages .

Sunday Juniors 10.30;

By 10.30 the wind had really settled in and with a big group of sailors present it was always bound to be a bit hectic on the water, most everyone sailed Teras with Flynn and Xavier opting for the 4.7 laser.

The wind had increased to around 12 knots with a occasional extra puff which made for fast if not bumpy ride. Once the boys got accustomed to the conditions and realised that they could go very fast it was on for everyone to start planning. Mark, Finn, Patrick were having a great time trying to out do each other and then you had Flynn and Xavier in the laser with the biggest grins on their faces overtaking everyone. There were quite a few capsizes with India having one too many and having to pull out due to being exhausted, she even christened the new sail with some Broadwater mud.

The outstanding performance on the day goes to Jonah who as one of the smallest sailors out there and despite multiple capsizes kept turning around and going back out to give it another go despite shivering so much that even the water was vibrating. Great sailing everyone .

Open Bic;

Unfortunately the BICs had to be cancelled, it was decided after sending out the clubs designated crash test dummy (Dylan) that conditions were getting too extreme with winds gusting around 18/20 knots, definitely too much for the group. At least now we have a test dummy on call!

Club Racing;

We again had a good fleet at the start line with winds around 15/20 knots from the southeast and a long course set all the way to the top of Sovereign Island, apparently the reaches were fantastic .

Despite crashing at the start line with 30 seconds to go Chris managed to come home first in just over an hour and twenty with Andrew not far behind. There were a lot of DNF,s with conditions reaching 25/30 knots which was definitely two much for the 4.7 boys and girls and a few people in full rigs. The best swims we saw from the rescue boat were Roger (letting the main out too far on the down wind!) and Tara no vang on for the downwind, Ted and I tried to send her a telepathic message to pull it on but not in time for the high side and spin and flip finally landing on the sand bar , great crash Tara . I am sure everyone slept well on Sunday night .

Catch you on the water next weekend
