Christmas from the Club House

Hi Everyone,
As another year draws to a close we as usual rounded the year off with our annual Try Sailing Fundraiser and Club Christmas Party last Sunday. I don’t know how I did it but the day turned out absolutely perfect with brilliant Sunshine and light e/s/e winds all day .

I think I counted 15, yes, 15 boats on the water at one stage with members and new sailors on board cruising up and down the Broadwater with smiles and laughter everywhere. It is by far the best year since we started this event three years ago with our sign on numbers for the day almost doubling from last year. Thanks to Roscoe from Brisbane Cats who at times looked like an overloaded Manly ferry on his Nacra we managed to show even more people the fun of sailing. I believe there will be a few photos on our webpage as well.

Chris from the Hospital Foundation was blown away by the whole event, he told me that he had only expected a small showing on the day and the numbers plus with member volunteers out on boats talking to people on the shore and handing out flyers was just amazing.

We haven't as yet finalised the total amount raised as I am waiting for Chris to add his donations but it is looking like we managed to raise almost double last years amount ($400.00). This money goes towards those in need in hospital and as Chris said every bit helps by the equipment needed to help provide the best care possible.

The Club Christmas party was also bigger and better than last year with double the numbers from the previous year and as usual Pieters ham was a great success with absolutely no meat left at the end, a special thanks also to everyone who brought the extras along which all in all made for a fun afternoon.

2014 will be our biggest year yet with many projects listed for the year including the Open Bic Championships, River Series, Laser Traveller Series and lets not forget the Pan Pacific Masters Games in November. We will also be expanding the opportunities for our young sailors with plans in the pipeline to offer more training both individual and crewed plus the opportunity for more Juniors to go racing.

Finally thank you to all the volunteers both Adult and Juniors who show up on weekends, maintenance days and at our fundraisers because without you people the club wouldn’t be successful and continue to grow every year.

FOOTNOTE :
This club was started over six years ago as an idea by a group of people who wanted to offer sport to both families, Children and the general public at a low cost and within a family atmosphere and provide support to everyone who had the desire to gain a personal level of fitness while learning a new sport and I myself believe that we are attaining these original goals. It is only through hard work and dedication to these goals that the club has reached its present level of success and lets hope the future is just as successful .

PS ; for those who know the original we now have a new Jasmine !how do I know she tried to run me over in a laser yesterday , see I told you that you  would get a mention Jasmine .

Have A Happy and Safe Christmas everyone

Hi Everyone,
Yes I am a bit late this week but I have a good excuse ITS CHRISTMAS.

Having said that its all go for our open day this weekend with Try Sailing activities starting at 8.30 and going through to 1.30 pm. It should be good fun for everyone as there will be a jumping castle, parent and child races, raffles and general fun so bring your friends along as well. PS don’t forget to bring $2 to donate to the Gold Coast University Hospital which goes towards those in need.

Sunday Juniors 8.30 class:
Well again we had beautiful weather conditions but I don’t know what happened with only 10 budding sailors having a good sail in 4 to 6 knot winds. It was a bit slow at first but as the morning went on the wind built to around 6 knots. Buttercup (Cobey 0) sailed well with our new girl Jasmine right on his heels, she even managed to succeed at my race tacking style! cant say much though for the supposed racing crew who tried to show her how it was done BACK TO THE SIMULATOR!

Sunday Juniors 10.30 class:
Again conditions were perfect with everyone sailing solo and because conditions were so good with winds in the east we went for a few laps to Runaway Bay and back. Everyone really enjoyed sailing away from the club and especially because the winds were better away from Ephriam Island. It even gave the kids a chance to sail without all the expert commentary from the shore which as we all know is invaluable right dads !!!

Open Bic:
The racing was held in the best conditions with easterly winds around 10 knots, so with David's help we sent them down towards Runaway Bay for 4 laps of racing. We were going to send them further but the boat traffic was horrendous so to play it safe we stayed close to the club. The race was won by Luka with Dylan second (apparently due to too much singing) and the rest just following. Apparently some people might need to definitely go back to the simulator then maybe they will miss the rounding buoy.

Open Race;
The open race was our last race of 2013 and as usual it was the Club Marathon which was held around Crab Island in winds of around 12 to 15 knots, again everyone had to contend with the usual powerboat brigade as usual on the wrong side of the channel and very choppy conditions on the upwinds. Mar Brown flew home first with Maurie a close second and Peter third. George Morton sailed well in the 4.7 and came in in front in the 4.7 with Oscar second and Lachy third. A special mention to Will and Jack who sailed the 420 with a leaking bailer and didn’t capsize !!!

Ok everyone don’t forget the Xmas Party on Sunday starting at 2.30 pm c u there!

Hi Everyone,
We are getting ever closer to Christmas so as usual life in general is becoming very hectic with parties, presents and holidays being planned so don’t forget to put the 15th of December in for our open day and then sailors Christmas Party. It should be a great day so come along and meet your fellow sailors.

Sunday Juniors 8.30; Sunday dawned minus rain to a patchy day with 20knot winds predicted and slight swell. We managed to set our early learners out sailing two up due to the winds around 10 knots and gusty. Most had a few problems with the odd capsize and drifting backwards but one boat stood out and that was Cobey (better known as buttercup who with his crew of two sailed the best out of the fleet even though they did have a capsize. Our new sailor (4 weeks) Jasmine again sailed well on her own and I don’t think it will be long before she moves up to 10.30 class, we are going to look at upgrading her tacking style to racing standard as I think that will be the ultimate destination for her.

Sunday Juniors 10.30;
With the wind speed increasing to around 15 knots I decided that everyone should sail together although Dallas selected to sail the BIC on his own. The conditions reached around 18 knots with again even two up some capsizing but I will give Dallas an A for effort because despite several capsizes he kept getting back in and going again. The most consistent pair were Xavier and India who sailed well through the whole session and no capsizes, well done guys! We did however shorten the lesson as conditions were becoming quite gusty and dangerous .

Open Bic Racing;
By the time that the O'PEN BIC were supposed to race conditions were so bad we didn’t even send out our crash test dummy (Dylan) as it was a hands down he wouldn’t make it, somehow I thing he was quite relieved on that decision.

Open Racing;
Conditions were nearly un-sailable with winds gusting to around 25 knots so it was a skippers decision and yes they all decided to have a go! To keep everyone close to the club we set a short triangle course just down to the first canal. At the start most people were late as the wind was so noisy they didn’t hear the start horn so there were quite a few late starters. Conditions then worsened to where the wind was gusting to over thirty knots which made the gybe mark quite dangerous with everyone being very cautious but the broad reaches were spectacular. Most of the fleet ended up pulling out with only four boats out of the original twelve finishing and yes even they were capsizing . All in all it was a wild day hopefully not to be repeated for some time even I was exhausted and I didn’t even sail.

C U all at next weeks marathon final race for 2013

Regards
