Hi Everyone , As you have all been informed that our annual Mid Winter Cup was cancelled last weekend and the main reason that it was cancelled was just simply due to lack off numbers which made running the event not financially viable . In regards to this cancellation we are now looking at running the event on the gold coast show weekend in august but we just have to do some research on whether their are any other major sailing events on that same weekend and hopefully if not then we may be able to generate enough numbers to run a successful event.
With no Regatta last weekend we decided to have a club clean up day where we did building maintenance , powerboat maintenance , sailing boat maintenance and general repairs , its amazing how much junk you can find in a clean up so much in fact that we ended up with two full ute loads for the recyclers and thanks to darren for supplying his ute as the second vehicle as the club truck was soon full . We even had time to wish Daniel a happy 15th Birthday with cake and yes it was my favourite CHOCOLATE !!! Greg and Matt looked after the outside and the mezzanine so that you can actually find things up there while Taylah was put in charge of re sorting the shelves while the rest of us just went round in circles cleaning sorting and storing and just a word of warning Jade has put all the PFD,s and helmets in size order and she has vowed to make sure everyone puts everything back in its rightful place and I should know as I was the first one in trouble for putting one in the wrong spot sorry Jade I promise to try better from now.
Just as a final note please keep an eye on the weather for next weekend as rain is predicted again plus strong winds but you know mother nature she can be very fickle !
Holiday sailing camp
with only a small group of keen sailors booked in but with absolutely perfect light conditions including blue skies we soon had everyone on the water in what was basically n/w winds around 1/5 knots . Most of the boys and girls were from our sunday morning group so they were all keen to learn how to st5eer and tack so while Jade and I were teaching from the shallows Taylah and Dan were on Sarah Cooper keeping them going once they were on the water and yes it was cold standing in the water practicing tacking with them . On tuesday conditions were not as favourable so we took everyone up to the Soverign Isand bridge and checked it out and decided we would sail there using the instructors to take people out so they didnt miss their sailing . Ross did a great job even though he capsized early taking everyone for a turn then Daniel took a  few as well and jade who has never sailed lasers before especially in winds from 8- 15 knots had a go but wasnt impressed as apparently lasers go really fast !!! when the gusts hit. We did finish early due to the conditions becoming really cold and everyone pulling out and I must admit even with 5 layers I was also getting cold . So whyat did we do after lunch well Taylah had them all play a game called how mush sailing gear can you pick up and then hang on the rack and it was actually a brilliant idea as normally most of it gets left for us to pick up . The final activity was from Ross and Daniel and involved the funniest game of touch footy and with me as video and sideli8ne ref there were unfortunately a lot of penalties awarded against Ross and Dan from video replay and although they still think they won the general consus was the the juniors gave them a pasting so well done kids !
Camp 2 next week is filling fast so if you want to join in the fun contact the sailing office .The cost for two days is $110.00 p/p and booking is essential !

Hi Everyone , Firstly we have decided that due to a lack of numbers ( other one off junior events clashing ) for next weekends Mid Winter Cup that we have decided to postpone this event until August and we are hoping that on the sunday we can also include our beginner sailors from our sunday morning Tera group for the first time we just have to work out the format .
Next saturday we are conducting a maintenance day starting at 9.am so that we can have the bulk of our junior fleet ready for next summer so if you can spare some time just let us know .
Sunday Juniors is still cancelled for next sunday as we are looking at a mini regatta for all our youth sailors who have worked so hard this year to prepare themselves for bot Mid winter Cup and Youth Week even the weather is looking good and we might even use our new minion buoys .Just as a reminder that both our holiday camps are filling fast so if you want to book in send the club an email requesting a enrolment form.
8.30 am Sunday Morning Juniors
With only the three sisters turning up it was an easy group allowing me to sit on the shore and watch the team in action and yes they all did well with Charlie Guy and Taylah in charge on sarah cooper while Ross , Jade and Dan helped the girls improve their sailing . It was an easy course with the wind out of the N/W at around 4 knots so perfect for the sisters who have only just learnt to steer . Harvey and Reece also rigged Bic,s and joined in but sailed a longer course especially Reece who practiced his reversing skills under the bridge that no sail zone is tricky right Reece ? Harvey was sent off to the green channel marker which included a good downwind that had Harve flying at times as the wind speed increased to around 10/12 knots S/S/E yes it went from N/W TO S/S/E
10.30 Youth Training
With most of the laser sailors out of action it was only the Bic sailors who ventured out .
daniel and jade just cruised down the track and back as it was an expression sail for them , they even swapped boats yep not sure why as they are exactly the same ? these two sailors have been training hard as have the laser people so it was good to see them out there just having fun and yes the both fell out of their boats while returning to shore and yes we all laughed as usual. Their upwind sail to Runners was excellent to watch with great boat speed and good close hauled sailing..
1.30 pm Racing
With the wind increasing to around 12-15 knots S/E Charlie and Taylah set the southerly course with the start between Ephriam and Soverign and yes they had to obey Nav Marks .
Casey turned up as she had an rdo from work and she was keen to get out there amongst the boys who by the way were keen to beat her . I was told by Charlie that the start was clean yes I wasnt there it was just Charlie . Taylah and Kyle who organised the whole race , I managed to have a day on shore definitely much warmer there . Reports had Nic our front early but after stopping to clear weed of his rudder you guessed it he capsized leaving Greg in front closely followed by you guessed it Casey then Steve . Greg pulled away a bit when casey got the mainsheet caught around the end of the boom ( we have all been there ) and had to gybe to get it off . apparently she gave greg a real run for his money to the finish line as he was still puffing 5 minutes after returning to shore . Unfortunately for Steve he cracked the floor in his boat which will need MAJOR repair or maybe Steve a new boat ?

8.30 am Sunday Juniors :
Well it was pretty quiet last Sunday morning as suspected considering the previous weeks cold snap but the actual conditions were perfect for Juniors with light winds from the N/W and blue skies so Charlie and Taylah set a course right out front for everyone to have a go . Grace asked to sail alone again as she wanted to work on tacking so we gave her some instruction in the shallows while the sisters had a session Jade also in the shallows before Jade ( ray ) set the off to do some tacking around the buoys , ok they werent perfect but they gave it a go! . The wind did move around and occasionally die out making Instructing everyone hard work with Charlie radioing in at one stage in utter frustration as the wind moved 90 degrees and yes the tide was on the out so sailing back to the club was a challenge .
All in all despite the low numbers it was still a great morning.
10.30 am Youth Training:
With the wind building from the N/ W to around 10 knots it was looking ideal for a good training session even if everyone was a bit slow rigging . There was the usual discussion regarding how to sail the conditions which were actually going to prove a challenge but everyone seemed up to it even Reece how was giving it his first attempt at this more advanced class . Everyone set off well except Jade ( ray ) who broke her rudder down rope after leaving the beach and Reece missed the gust from behind and capsized but to his credit he got his Bic up and continued on to the yellow at the canal . The winds picked up to around 16 knots in the gusts so we told Reece to go back in as it was too windy for him and he was shaking from the cold . Dan , Taylah , Harvey and Jade headed for the X mark down near runners which proved a challenge as the wind gusts were now reaching 20 knots . Daniel Taylah and Jade handled the conditions well must be all that training but Harvey was finding it hard going considering he weighs less than 30 kilo,s but with Charlie and I beside him he gave it a good shot and only ran aground once which unfortunately meant I had to jump out and help him turn it around and head off again and yes it was bloody cold . Charlie and I reckon Harvey is a legend as he sailed all the way back to the club even though we offered him a tow , so well done Harve!

1.30 pm Open Racing :
We only had a couple of sailors turn up but conditions were getting worse and with the youth sailors not too keen to go back out because of the cold and wind speeds reaching a very gusty 25/28 knots it was decided to cancel racing as it was not a championship race which I dont think anyone was too worried about.

Good morning everyone , the sun is shining the sky is blue and the wind is freezing still but at least its not howling like monday and looking at the forecast for the next two weeks it is going to remain constant so can you still sail in the cold weather well yes its simple wear a wetsuit and dont capsize ! This weather should also still be around at the end of the month when we are holding the midwinter cup so fingers crossed for fine sunny days and good winds because it hasnt always worked out that way same as youth week at manly the following week . We are still looking for volunteers for our midwinter cup to help on the beach and canteen so if you can spare some time just let us know .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors :
With the cooler weather now here minus the rain and strong winds the conditions are perfect for this early class to get out and practice not only tacking but gybing also . Laya who was the only girl on the day was keen to practice more gybing and from what I say she is starting to really nail it and her general sailing is getting smoother each week . Leon was again out on the laser sitting further forward so gaining more boat speed in the light conditions so well done mate and the gybes werent bad either . With Ross,s guidance the rest of the boys were working on either technique or tacks and gybes and in general doing well and yes Ross is still doing an on shore session back at the beach helping everyone refine especially their tacking techniques and always has a good crowd of interested sailors watching on.
So all in all a good session!
10.30 Youth Training :
With the wind slowly building from the n/w we firstly had a briefing as Charlie wanted to work with Daniel on preferred courses as in lay lines or tacking to a mark ( which is faster ) and I thought everyone would hopefully benefit from the discussion as we have a few regattas coming up over the next couple of months . There were lots of good questions on the topic which we were hopeful would stick in the memory bank ? We hit the water a bit late but at least the wind had come up to around 8 knots with the odd 12 knot gust from basically the west so it was important to keep an eye on the water colour to pick out the gusty bits . Everyone did really well considering the shifty winds and changing wind strength and I dont believe there were even any capsizes even from Ross who still has a tendency to over roll his tacks and gybes !
1.30 pm Open Race :
With the wind conditions starting to turn more north I set the days course using the north course from the notice board but not including navigation marks . It set a reasonable length course thinking in the current conditions ( 8/15 knots ) that it should take about 1 hour for the first boats to finish . We set the start at runners creating a good upwind to A mark up near the top of soverign and with everyone really keen to start we soon had everyone lined up and ready to take off . The best start was from Ross who really nailed the start and was early keeping the full rigs and radials at bay in his 4.7 and also getting a good start were the Open Bic,s who were both up there in the line as the starters horn blew . Early in the race Tom Greg and Nick slowly got ahead with everyone else hot on their heels but Nick again soon broke away and just sailed away and Greg and Tom had no answer ? although the did ask me afterwards why he got so far ahead and I told them his sail shape is much better as the use the newer type of full sail and Nick uses the original laser manufactured sail which honestly has a better shape upwind especially when the wind comes up . In the radials matt did well again with Steve also going well while our youth sailors seemed to forget everything they had been told at 10.30 briefing ???
We have decided next time we have a briefing we are going to supply single ear plugs so that everything that goes in one ear doesnt dribble out the other ear right guys !!!.

Hi Everyone , with no news letter last week because of the cancellation of all sailing due to the pouring rain and wind last weekend turned out absolutely perfect conditions with the sun returning and light winds and looking at the long term chart next weekend is looking very promising as well if not just a little bit colder so I suggest wetsuits and if you dont have your own the club has plenty to loan to all our young sailors .
Our Mid Winter Cup Regatta is only a few weeks away now so dont forget that sunday the 26th june there will be no juniors as both the saturday and sunday are taken up with Mid Winter Cup activities and club open racing is also not on for the sunday afternoon
8.30 am Sunday Juniors :
With beautiful blue skies and light winds we soon had a dozen young sailors signed on for the early class with boats rigged and ready and down on the beach ready to go. Ross was given the job of running the briefing as to be honest he is really good at it and interacts with everyone well . With the winds out of the n/w Guy set a nice reach from the bridge to the beach fairly close at first because we were worried about predicted strong winds but then of course the winds changed and slowed down and half the fleet started drifting south.so Charlie Ross and Jade launched the yellow boat and started towing and guiding people back . Harvey Reece and Tristan all took new sailors out and then brought the back in so that we could give them all steering lessons in the shallows so well done boys . Ross did his usual after session tacking school with some very interested young sailors watching on while he showed the behind the back tacking technique so all in all a good session
10.30 am Youth Training:
With  a few people missing with covid again we only had a small group for this class with three Bics and 1 Laser signed on Tristan was going to join in but I think him doing instructing for the first time at 8.30 class tired him out so he came on sarah to learn more about instructing.
Conditions were still flukey and the current was getting stronger on the outgoing tide so sailing across the channel to the gybe marks was difficult , Reece being the youngest member of the group did have trouble finding the wind as it continually shifted as did harvey although he was doing better than reece even if he occassionally forgot to pop battens ? Ross was practicing roll tacks and gybes while Jade just basically sailed around the course making the difficult conditions look easy and trust me they werent!
1.30 pm Open Racing :
With the winds settling in from the N/W at around 6 to 15 knots and the current absolutely roaring out I decided to not run our usual westerly course and set a start down near runners on the crab island side and A mark at the port mark near ephriam and a B mark over near the green channel mark near the sandbank We ended up with eleven boats on course and despite charlies prediction that we would probably need the recall flag everyone played nice well except Peter who because the port tack start was preferable came accross on starboard and forced a lot of people to tack away but surprisingly no collisions .The course comprised a couple of windward leewards then two triangles and it soon turned into a two horse race withGreg and Nick battling for the lead until as greg put it he overlaid the a mark and didnt cover nick who slipped into the lead all the way to the end , I believe at the finish line there was only around five seconds between the boats so a good race guys.
In the Youths Jade just cruised the course while Ross was right up there in his 4.7 and again I think on handicap he finished second or third on handicap and yes it was freezing on the start boat !!
