Hi Everyone , Well its getting closer yes the 2022 Midwinter Cup runs from the 25/6/1022 to the 26/6/2022 and is open to all youth sailors in Bic Skiff , Opti , Sabot and Laser and caters for both beginners and more experienced sailors with both racing and fun sailing over both days . This Junior / Youth Regatta started as a Open Bic regatta but after lots of enquiries over the next couple of years was expanded to include Opti , Sabot , Bic Skiff and Lasers so now it caters for a wider selection of boats which offers more competition for young sailors to test their skills over two days of sailing . As usual there are two divisions one being green fleet sailors who are basically still learners and then then open fleet for those with more experience under their belt .
To all our usual sunday morning sailors dont forget that on the weekend of the 25th-26th june there will be no junior sailors
8.30 am Sunday Juniors:
With the weather on saturday afternoon not looking good for sunday I must admit that I thought that juniors wouldnt take place but as I always say you never know what mother nature will come up with on the day which for sunday was overcast and about 5 knots from the south . We had 10 young sailors sign on with a couple of virtually beginner sailors which Harvey and Reece took on leaving most of the senior instructors to watch from the shore and occasionally fir rigging while Guy Taylah and Charlie coached them on the water . All the boys were soon out there including Leon who was having his first solo on a laser and despite being a bit nervous at the start he was soon out there and cruising around but next time he is going to sit further forward right leon so we can get more speed . Back on the rigging area Ross had his own audience as he showed some of our sailors how we tack with facing the front and having the tiller extension behind your back and I believe there is another session next sunday as well.
10.30 am Youth Sailing:
With ABBY missing due to being flooded in and Taylah not sailing we just had one laser and three Bics out practicing windward leewards and the old favourite whistle gybing . The wind had come in to around 7 knots but was more consistant down at Runners so we headed down there stopping foo at the canal to practice gybes . Harvey struggled a bit with the whistle system as its pretty consistant but Iam sure he will get it in the end while Ross who was over rolling at the start slowed the action and became much smoother . Jade  and Dan were lacking boat speed when coming out of the gybes mainly due to main sheet being held on instead of dropping the lot as they gybe which they did eventually get right and looked a lot more racey .At least everyone came back in smiling even Guy and Reece who had stayed down in front of the club practicing tacks and gybes .
1.30 pm Open Racing:
As it wasnt a club championship day the guys decided to just head out for a practice sail so they all went of to between ephriam and soverign to do some upwinds to the green at the top of soverign . Usually we just watch from the shore when they are in our channel but seeing that they were out of sight and Harvey Reece and Scott had decided to join them we loaded up and when out to watch them cruise around and luckily there was no rain!
Once everyone came back and packed up it was time for the 2021 club championship presentation so who won in 2021?
RESULTS :
OPEN FLEET.                  YOUTH FLEET
1 GREG PHILLIPS            1 JADE SHAW
2 STEVE PUDNEY            2 DANIEL GRAYDON
3 MATT WHITEMAN         3 ROSS BEEDLE

Congratulations to all the winners for putting in a great effort in 2021and to all the other competitors who sailed throughout the Series

 Hi Everyone , Looking at the current weather patterns both up north and down south and with fingers crossed the current winds ( averaging 30knots + ) and rain bands should subside by the weekend at least to the stage where we can operate all our weekend activities. Currently out the front of the club the wind is gusting 30 knots and our caretaker jeff and his wife wendy have lost another balcony marquee at around 1.00am this morning with wendy telling me she was out there in the rain trying to secure it in her pyjamas as jeff is currently in hospital recovering from blood poisoning . there was talk of calling me but thank god she got it down as I would not have looked forward to coming over at 1am in the rain and wind .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors :
With it being mothers day we didnt expect many junior sailors in this session but we still had eight sailors turn up to give it a try .
The weather was perfect with a basic southerly breeze at around 4/6 knots so Charlie and Taylah set a simple reaching course in front of the club and because of the good conditions we allowed everyone to both tack and gybe . As usual there were the odd rigging problems with tangled mainsheets , bent snail clips and loose vangs but they were soon rectified by the instructors on shore so that everyone could get out there and enjoy the morning  So who went well on the day ? heres the list Mitch Zack Max Olivia Xavier , Daniel yes all of the group sailed really well and not only sailed well even returned to shore well ( centreboards half way up ) but they also packed up their boats including washing the mud of sails from the odd capsize.
10.30 am Youth Training :
This group of sailors are really going forward with their sailing skills and with the winds now up around 12/15 knots and a bit gusty it was going to be a challenge on the water. As part of their preparations we always discuss rules and wind angles and they are all slowly getting it as they will need the knowledge for midwinter cup , manly regatta and Yeppoon . Reece had his first go at 10.30 but he stayed near the club with two older sailors in Guy and Scott and as per my instructions he only slightly smiled when sailing past certain people when they were capsized while he stayed dry . The rest of the fleet ended up at the yellow X up near runners practicing bearaways down to the yellow cone then back up again . Taylah was right into it with some fast gybes which she is definitely getting better at as she no longer hits her head with the boom . Abby went back early after three wild capsizes well thats what happens when you dont change sides as fast as the boom does right Abbs !!! Ross as usual sailed fast as did the Bic sailors with some really good mark roundings so all in all a great session.
1.30 pm Open Racing:
With most people away for mothers day we only had six boats at the startline which we set just south of the club and the A mark just behind the channel splitting mark down near runners and yes people still wrote it down ? The winds had increased to around 14/17 knots but luckily they had an incoming tide so the waves were only small . Ross capsized before the start as did Matt I keep telling them not to gybe around the start line when the wind sup maybe one day they will learn . The two Bics sailed well together with Jade slowly pulling away and finishing first while in the lasers greg did the same over steve and Ross while Matt pulled out after too many capsizes . Ross for some reason sailed too wide on the downwind otherwise I reckon he would have at least beat steve on handicap from radial to 4.7 , we did mention it to him after the race especially by sailing over there he sailed out of the incoming tide so lost ground on Steve . With Kelly now taking photos and posting them on line we now get to see more of what goes on on the water so thanks again Kelly.
Upcoming .
2021 Club Championship
presentaion at approximately 4.00 pm sunday 15/5/2022 so come along and congratulate the winners after a hard fought 2021.

Hi Everyone , I cant believe it but we are already in may so that means we have to start on the details of this years mid winter cup which is logged in for the 25th/26th of June . Last years event was a bit smaller than previous years so we are putting a maximum effort in this year to hopefully bring back the numbers . The event is open to Lasers , Bic Skiff , Opti,s and Sabots with both open fleets and beginners fleet ( green ) with two age groups from 13 and under to 18 an under with some Bic skiffs and a club turbo 4.7 available for lease for the event . As usual we will be looking for volunteers for both on water and on shore duties so if you can spare some time either saturday or sunday just let the club know as all help will be greatly appreciated .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors ;
With nowhere near the wind strengths of the previous weekend we had a good turnout for this class with 14 sailors signing on for what was looking like a great session . Winds were out of basically the south at around 4 to 8 knots so yes it was a bit gusty at times catching people out like annabel who was learning to gybe after some practice on shore with me , ok she did go for the odd swim but she kept at it so well done . In the boys beside Jack one of our new sailors who after a rocky start to his sailing career has with both andrew and my help is really starting to look like a sailor so again well done Zack .So why did I say beside Jack well he just is so smooth and is starting to make it look easy even when he is helping new sailors which we know can be a challenge at times . We might even have a extra couple of Bic sailors in Laya and Lana as with dads permission we have offered them a try out in a real sail boat after the managed the club Taz on the day which is not an easy boat to sail . Our new class presenter in Ross is growing in confidence as well and even getting funnier in front of the class while still reminding them all about safety so again well done Roscoe !.
10.30 am Youth Training;
Well with a few sailors missing from this session in Taylah and Daniel ( family camping weekend ) we still had some keen sailors in Jade , Harvey , Joe and of course Ross , Guy was thinking of going out as he is currently doing a learn to sail course with Charlie but as the winds had come up a bit we decided no as he hasnt sailed in those wind speeds ( 8/12 knots ) .  We did as usual have a briefing and again discussed barging and to my surprise they are all actually getting it so thats another box I can tic .As usual Ross was first out then the rest of the team with gybing first up around two buoys then we slowly set them all off ending up going around the yellow mark at the canal . While Jade and Ross basically cruised around each course , joe did struggle a bit upwind but to be fair his boat on the day was non turbo but he still went well but unfortunately we wont be seeing him again for a while as he has a sailing commitment at Syc  as well plus lots of school work so for the short term sailing has to take second place .
Open Racing ;
With winds around 8 to 14 knots from the south we set our southerly course starting between ephriam and soverign whit A mark right down near the X at Runners and the B mark up the top of Soverign . The start was excellent and Jade out smarted everyone by port starting and even though the fleet was soon on her on starboard ( she was on port ) she tacked and was right up the front with the fleet . Greg slowly got out in front of Tom while Steve had to retire and until an unfortunate coming together between Ross and a sand bank he was holding down fourth do worry I dobbed him in to his dad so apparently there is going to be a sand pit with channel marks right at his door just to rub it in . I have to mention the weather as it rained the whole time we were out there anchored in the start boat but not everywhere else so Charlie and i were frozen by the end and then we had to pick up the marks ! so when did the rain stop well when we pulled up at the pontoon could have gone for a hot chocolate Kelly !
