Hi everyone , Well firstly how did the windsurfing state titles go ? In a nutshell it was a great weekend with mother nature giving the fleet varied conditions from 6 knots to 20 knots plus so some ordinary and some awesome sailing over the two days especially on the really windy races where these sailors just blitzed the upwinds and yes there were quite a few capsizes on the downwinds which just added to the colourful spectacle . They did get caught out with the broadwater currents with a couple of general recalls which were a bit of fun especially when the air horn failed so we had Sarah C as fill in sound signal boat . A special thanks to Kelly and Nola who looked after the canteen and sausage sizzle each day and also Greg , Tom , Chris who crewed Sarah as safety boat . Lets hope they pick our club again in the near future .
Bookings are now being taken for the club Xmas Party on the 18th of december and again it will be held at the club , if you would like to come along just ask or email the club to secure places for your family and yes its always fun especially for the kids !
Holiday junior sailing camps start from the 12/12/2022 with four camps over the break so if you want to book the kids in for some fun and learning contact the sailing office as numbers per camp are limited .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
We werent expecting a very big group for 8.30 but we still managed to have 8 keen sailors sign on and with all these keen young people out rigging early all boats were soon down on the beach ready to go. With the wind out of the north roughly Charlie and Guy soon had a course set for everyone reaching accross the channel in around originally 3/5 knots which luckily filled in to 5-7 knots consistant . Daniel had his own student in Orson who had asked if he could be taught tacking and he actually picked up the tacking really quickly and Dan soon had him out with the group around the reaching course . Torsen and Zack were just cruising around tacking and gybing with especially Zack really nailing the tacks and gybes could be time for him to think about 10.30 training Class Dad !. The funniest part was the two sisters Leila and Halle who managed to capsize their boat over the mud and you guessed it got the mast stuck so Charlie had to come in and help them right the boat as she was really stuck ! the boat that is the girls were just screaming but thats normal for them and there was even talk of sailing separate boats next week?
10.30 am Youth Training .
With Jade and Ross away it was only Taylah Daniel Reece , Harvey Laya and Xavier on the water in around 6/7 knots so after the normal briefing discussing the last sail well to be honest it was me discussing the last sail as I was the only one who could remember that far back ! So what did we discuss well we discussed downwind sail set and upwind sail set which innitially drew blank stares from everyone but as soon as Imentioned the show and tell part where Daniel showed them how its done while they followed on the powerboat it started to come back for everyone . To start of they were all told to gybe around the marks set near the club then off we went down the channell and I must admit some of our newer sailors sailed much better than two weeks previously especially Laya and Xavier who both l;ooked much smoother both downwind and upwind so well done guys and keep up the good work . Reece and Harvey are at a stage were we need to think of extra challenges as they are both doing so well at this time . Taylah and Daniel really just did some freestyling with Daniel sailing off down the channel then doing a very sharp upwind back toward the club . To further enhance this group we have come up with a plan for 2123 for a ten race Youth Rcaing Series which as soon as I finalise the NOR I will post it on line and at the club so everyone can have time to register .

1.30 PM Open Racing
Well with people away and others having surgery ( matt ) and only Tom turning up you guessed it the marathon was cancelled . We are possibly doing something next sunday weather permitting but even that is a bit dodgy with the current forecast is for rain and strong wind so we will have to wait for the weekend before making a decision .

Hi everyone ,Firstly I just want to remind everyone that our normal operations will be suspended this weekend as we are the host club for the state windsurfing titles on both saturday and sunday . We have hosted windsurfing in the past and its always exciting to watch another group of sailors show their skills on their preferred class of sailing vessel and if the wind gets up they really get going so come along and check them out !
Our annual Xmas party will be held at the club again this year due to popular demand and there is even a rumour that our young sailors will be going for a  sail to the seaway weather permitting but if the weather is not suitable for sailing we are going to pile everyone on the rescue boats and go and check it out anyway so check the flyer for details either way it should be fun. To book in please contact the club so that your family can be added to the list as its a catered event
The school holiday camps are now open for booking with bookings already coming in for the two camps in december ( 12/13- 19/20 ) so if you would like to book in send an email request as numbers per camp are limited .
The club will be closing on the 21st of december for a well deserved christmas break for all the volunteers and re opening on the 4th of January 2023.
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
After a really hit and miss year with the weather lately the weather has been just right with reasonable winds and generally blue skies for this session and as usual last sunday was no different with n/w to n winds so the guys ( charlie & guy ) set up a standard reach across the broadwater and after a longer than normal briefing  ( my fault ) we soon had everyone on the water . The winds were around 6/8 knots so perfect for everyone to get their boat going and even though they were a bit shifty everyone was really flying around the course and there was some really sharp tacking with Zack really sharp at tacking in the Bic and yes Torsen stayed away from gybing this week after his close call the week befrore .I always thank our volunteer sailing instructors as without you people there wouldnt be so many happy faces even Ross,s crew came back smiling and yes they did loose one over the side but he was soon recovered and off they went again . I nearly forgot that charlie was on the rescue boat which is unusual but he was a bit sore from sailing on Daniel and Jades 29er skiff on saturday ( bruised knee,s and lump on one shin yep with three on board there wasnt enough room for him to sit down and she was flying at times so bruised knees and bumps on shins !
10.30 am Youth Training
With nearly all the team in attendance ( Tristan o/s ) we soon had boats rigged ( thanks Darren and Scott ) and ready to go . When asked what the wanted to practice everyone said upwind and gybing so we set a course down to the yellow at the canal and a upwind red mark out front of the club . To help them with the upwind we worked on the stepladder system using the obvious wind shifts on the day and for the downwind we used the whistle gybe . Our senior bic sailors in Daniel and Jade have had heaps of experience in these to manouveres so they were soon out there with the rest of the team right behind them we were ready to try downwind gybing and with jade , Dan , Harvey and Reece soon gone we just had Gemma , Grace , Laya and Xavier to work with and being new to the whistle gybe there was soon lots of capsizing but I have to say they all kept trying and then we had the upwind section which again was hard for them to grasp the stepladder concept so I decided in show and tell so we put all the boats on the beach and then put everyone on Sarah and we then sent Daniel out to show them all how its done and I think they were suitably impressed with Dan,s skill and hopefully the visual worked for next time only time will tell !
1.30 pm Open Racing
There was no racing on the day so a few of the guys just went for a training run over in front of Soverign where apparently it was a tad windy 16/18 knots with gusts . It was so blustery at times I heard that Tom did a granny so whats a granny well you should askTom and yes I have done the odd granny in my sailing career .

Hi Everyone , Charlie and I spent wednesday this week at our Varsity Lakes Sailing Venue introducing a group of school children from Broadbeach state school to sailing so I missed writing the news letter which I always try to complete on wednesdays so here we go even if its a day late .
With Christmas fast approaching we have decided to have our annual Christmas Party at the club again as it seems amongst the members that its the preferred place for a get together , we are just in the process of completing a new flyer and registration sheet which we will post soon so that everyone can hopefully fit it into their calendar . So when is the party ? its sunday the 18th of december starting at 12 noon , we are also planning on an adventure sail for our young sailors down to the seaway and back weather permitting leaving the club around 9.00am so if you would like to come along just let us know so we can add you to the list , should be a lot of fun ! We also need to remind everyone that sunday the 20th of november their are no juniors or racing as the club is holding the state windsurfing titles on both saturday and sunday its a great spectacle with over thirty competitors already signed up to compete so if you a bit bored come down either day and have a look at windsurfing and just like us all they need is wind to make it exciting.
OOPS ! almost forgot a very happy 9th birthday to Tristan hope you had a great day mate!
8.30 am Juniors
With near perfect wind conditions and sunny skies we soon had 10 keen young sailors signed on and rigging boats . . No sooner had we rigged the boats and we were in having briefing and working out who sails with who as we had a couple of newbies but as usual Tristan , Jade , Harvey and Reece took the new ones for a sail , its so great watching these people put their hands up to help our young sailors start the learning process.
So how did everyone go well after the guys set a nice reach accross the basically southerly winds which were coming in around 4 knots everyone was soon out their cruising around the course and if anyone ever asks why the juniors wear helmets just ask Torsen as he accidentally gybed and except for his helmet he would have copped the boom right on the forehead and yes it was loud and you guessed it he didnt make that mistake again . Leila and Halle managed to con Jade into sailing with them even though they had sailed alone the week before but they did steer and work the sail for some of the session ! thanks to Jade,s insistence .
10.30 am Youth Training
As we mentioned last week we are looking at a Youth Racing Series in 2023 and by the response from our sailors so far I think its going to be a great experience for everyone especially those that are looking at away events next year , I have started on a Notice of Race Document which will outline how the racing will work and once I tweek it a bit more I will send it to allthe interested parties .
We had again a good fleet of sailors at the briefing were we discussed the race event next year and also upwind sailing techniques and once we were finished wwe sent everyone of to the yellow X mark as on the day it was a perfect upwind course . Unfortunately the birthday boy Tristan had a failure on the beach so didnt make it out and Harvey and Reece just sailed away in what turned out to be quite strong s/e winds at around 16 knots but the boys just nailed it both upwind and down wind . We only had one laser out as Ross had knee trouble and Taylah was not feeling up to it so Guy rigged  fat buoy our racing laser for the first time and as he told me later couldnt believe how much faster a dedicated race boat was compared to a training laser , probably explains the capsizing right Guy !
1.30 pm Open Racing
With the winds settled from the s/e at around 12/14 knots I decided on a southerly course so I loaded the boat and relented and took a new crew out to help lay the marks which you might say was probably not the best idea considering the tangles they managed to get while setting the buoys but hay they were all so happy being part of it all .
As you would guess the start was about 15 minutes late so with Greg back from his overseas holiday the complaint section was back but as per club policy we just ignored him.
Most everyone lined up on starboard at the start except Tom who went port and despite miss timing it a bit and starting virtually last he tacked back early and sailed low towards the A mark down near runners but to my and Charlie s surprise he managed to grab a couple of lifts and was first around A and honestly just took off on what was basically a broad reach into a reach . It looked like Greg in second hand no answer but as the went around C and headed back to B he slowly reduced the gap and with a reaching finish came back to finish only 30 seconds behindTom with Steve crossing third while Matt came in forth and Roger fifth. . Just a reminder that next sunday is training day and our final marathon race is on the 27th of november.

Hi everyone , The big news for the club is that our new safety boat that was donated to the club by two great supporters of the club Buzz & Monty is finally on the water and running perfectly we even gave it to Jason to drive and he drove around for at least 20 minutes and it didnt break down so it means that its been Jason tested so she has to be right . The family who donated the boat have been locals for years and as they said to me they have watch the club grow over that time and were just blown away by not only the amount of kids that they have seen sailing but alos the great volunteers how donate their time on the weekends to make sure all the kids are safe and enjoy their sailing . The boat will be named Buzzmonty for obvious reasons and will mainly be used for general duties and racing . With the addition  of 3 more Bics to our fleet of Open Bics Skiffs we are looking at starting their own race series for 2023 and we will include Opti,s - Sabots and Tera,s for anyone who would like to come along and race here probably every second sunday like the open fleet and we will be asking for imput over the next couple of sundays . To start this possible series we are also looking at a one off race 27/11/22 which will co inside with our annual club marathon race starting at 1.30 pm and more than likely be held in our channel weather permitting .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
With a forecast of sunny weather it was always going to be a big day on sunday for junior sailing and it definitely was with 16 junior sailors signing on for the morning session who were taken back at first as the staff were all in a halloween theme yes even me in my black cape and charlie wearing his red devil horns as part of the fun . With Light winds and a big group of newbies as well we pulled out every usable boat bar two which are down at our Varsity Lakes sailing club for a school group and with the usual group of assistant instructors and instructors we soon had everyone kind of on the water why kind of ? well it was Halloween right so Charlie had organised races just for fun and it was a great success and yes very funny with people falling out of boats , drifting sideways and backwards but in general everyone finished each race even a few people who said they didnt know how to steer right girls! . Pack up was even quick as per Ross,s rule no one could go inside for more games until their boat was packed up so well done ross . By the time I walked inside there were games a plenty with pin the spider on the wed and a version of pub pong as well which all resulted in prizes of lollies and jelly sweets , a big thanks to Claire for organising all the fun as everyone had a ball .
10.30 am Youth Training
With the wind settling to the e/s/e at around 6 knots we soon had all the boats ready including the 29er skiff so off we went to briefing ,.Our first topic was return to shore as most people seem to have forgotten this process from what I observed a fortnight ago wher boats wer returning to shore with the wind behind them causing mayhem on the beach and it must have worked as this week they all came back pointing up into no sail zone .
They were all keen in both the Bics and the lasers  to basically go for a sail so we sent them south with the plan to keep going until we tell them to turn around . I  think especially the bics thought they would get a lot further but they all forgot the incoming tide which was quite long with only Harvey making it to the X mark at runners while the rest were about 80 mtrs behind . In  the Lasers of course Ross made it but Taylah stayed back with the Bics and just cruised while the new 29er sailors ( jade and Dan ) were just out to start learning how to sail the skiff. When they returned to shore they both looked happy especially as they didnt capsize but Iam sure it will happen in the future .
1.30 PM Open Racing
the next race for the open fleet is next sunday the 6th of november so the guys just went out for some training for the day and why not it was a perfect 6/8 knots sailing day .
