Sunday October 18th - Sailing

Hi Everyone , I think summer is finally here with warm winds and warm water it certainly is the best time of year to sail and don't forget the East based winds ! With Christmas fast approaching plans are underway for our annual Xmas Party which will be held at the club on Sunday the 6th of December and everyone is invited !

8.30am Juniors

Well what can I say, this class had the most Junior sailors with 20 juniors turning up to sail and with the winds out of the South early it was great sailing weather for everyone .
The two who stood out the most were Mary and Hado who with Tianna's help went merrily off sailing together great work Hado Mary really trusts you .
I have to also thank all our juniors who came along to help as without your teaching skills we couldn't have had such a successful day .

10.30am Juniors

Again we had a good crowd out there and with the winds swinging East it was perfect sailing weather to head of to the canal south of the club . With Alex in the lead and the rest close behind it was great to see them heading away from the club for a bit of a sail .
The winds were around 6/8 knots so it was perfect for practicing not only tacks and gybes but also sail trim .

Open Bic Racing

With Dallas , Pat and Jonah lining up with the adults at the start line and the winds increasing to around 15 knots we sent them off down to Runaway bay then up the track to the bottom of Ephraim except Pat who decided to do an extra leg from A to C . The best was the finish as with Dallas holding Jonah out from the finish Pat nearly beat them both over the line until he nose dived and let Dallas slip in first with amazingly Pat second ( still sailing underwater ) and Jonah 3rd .

Adult Racing

With Ideal conditions Will decided to try a port start only he was yelling Starboard ( shades of Dominic ) which confused the whole fleet resulting in a general recall with half the fleet miles over at the start . The second start was much more orderly with everyone on time . The winds increased to around 16/17 knots and I set a course with some good reaching and broadreaching speed sections around triangles . It was great to watch with spray flying and smiling faces all round . Will got home first with Greg and Macca following close on his
heels .

Sunday October 11th - Sailing

Hi Everyone, another week closer to Christmas, where did the year go ? The committee this week will be meeting to start organising both the Fund Raising Try Sailing Day and also our Club Christmas Party which will be held on Sunday the 6th of December, so mark it in your diaries now.

8.30am Juniors

With the warmer weather and 23 degree water we are now consistently looking at good numbers for this class with another dozen kids turning up on Sunday. The conditions were perfect with light breezes from the north so that we could put out a nice reach across the waterway . It was great to see Ava steering the laser but the best effort for the day goes to Tianna who managed with Hado's help to get the super quiet Mary on the water and enjoying herself. Great work Tianna .

10.30am Juniors

With the winds slowly turning e/n/e and after some practice just going around the buoys we sent everyone of to the east side port marker down from the club . This created better conditions wind wise as it was a couple of knots stronger down there so everyone managed to achieve better speeds especially the laser with Jess on board and also after a long absence due to a broken arm we had Alex Caban out there on his bic also going fast . All I have to do now with this group is stop them from constantly asking me the time ?

Open Bic Racing

With only Pat and Dallas on deck we put them in with the Adults at the start line and they didn't embarrass themselves with them both getting a good start at a busy start line. Dallas slowly pulled away from Pat especially on the upwinds, he is just smoking
Picture
upwind at the moment (must be the hiking stool he is practicing on) , It might be time for Pat to take it home and train on it, as it definitely looks like it works.

Adult Racing

With the winds turning east, we started over in the Runaway Bay Marina corner and sent the fleet upwind to A mark then up the track to the top of Sovereign then across into the inlet and then back down to A. The winds were around 15 / 17 knots so it made for great racing with Will home first and Greg not far behind . Unfortunately, both Casey and Sienna who raced with the Adults both suffered gear failure on the upwind to B but they both managed to sail back to the club unaided (Sienna broken vang and Casey broken tiller universal). The Tasar wasn't so lucky with early gear failure, but dogged determination they continued until the inevitable capsize . Wisely Mum and Ollie decided to transfer to the safety boat and Aidan jumped on to help Ben bring it home .

Other Notes

We are looking for volunteers for the Windsurfing Nationals being held in January 2016 on the Australia day weekend , we need people both on the water and on the shore so if you are free just let us know !

Sunday October 4th - Sailing

Hi Everyone, I had to miss last weeks letter as we were asked to run The University Games of Australia .
It was a big event with over sixty competitors for three days and with such short notice it was a mad scramble to make it all happen and happen it did with perfect weather and good winds it certainly look both colourful and exciting .
Picture
A special thanks goes to all the volunteers who helped both in the canteen and on water , you are the people that makes our club great .

8.30am Juniors

With a long weekend and the end of school holidays we didn't expect many sailors but we were wrong with a dozen hardy juniors getting out there in basically a northerly at around 5 knots it was perfect for both the new sailors and the experienced sailors . We even had two new boys all the way from Ireland who went out with Casey and Ava in the laser and Dallas took a couple of new sailors in the other club laser . Who stood out well I have to say the assistant instructors Dallas and Casey they were just so informative , Dallas had a group of six standing around the Tera listening to his explanations of sailing I was very impressed .

10.30am Juniors

This class basically didn't happen with only Cody there, so we got Dallas to rig the Bic so that Cody could have his first go in one . How did he go ? just great especially when we took Dallas off and he was on his own smiling from ear to ear , I think we now have another Bic sailor .

Adult Racing

With winds initially around 6/8 knots and very heavy boat traffic I only set a course from our channel up to the middle of Ephraim and back to the club but as usual the winds increased just before the start to around 12/14 knots so everyone was back in under an hour but no one seemed to complain as it was a great race and yes there was a lot of powerboat traffic which is always scary !

Junior Racing

With only the usual competitors in Dal , Jonah , Pat and Jas ( Casey raced with the adults ) we again set a shorter course which turned out in the conditions to be very quick with everyone home in around 40 minutes except Jonah who had to be towed home , just one of those days a Jonah !
Speaking of Jonah and Dallas  they competed in silver fleet in the Open Bic Queensland Cup in Silver Fleet at SYC two weeks ago and came home with first and second . Now we just need more Bic sailors .
Jonah 1st and Dallas 2nd nice work boys .
