Our sailors on sunday would have seen a new edition to our sailing fleet with a 29er racing skiff arriving at the club all the way from sydney where Scott and Dan went to check it out . It will be an interesting addition to our sailing fleet once they sort out the rigging as its a bit more complicated than a laser or Bic skiff but wonce its sorted it should be a lot of fun.
We are holding a haloween sailing morning on the 30/10/22 with sailing games and generally a lot of fun so come along dressed for the day I even might get dressed up myself ! so for details see the girls in the canteen or games director Charlie !!! .
Just in passing for everyone the club has been battling with council all year regarding excessive water usage bills and supposed water leaks but after constantly checking for leaks at showers and taps plus checking outside the building its now looking like it may be a water meter fault causing the club to receive extremely high water bills totalling over $5,000 p/a so lets hope its sorted soon .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
With the day starting totally different from saturday where it was blowing between 25 and 30 knots by lunchtime sunday started with light winds and mainly blue skies and with 9 young sailors signing on plus our usual sailors in reece harvey tristan we soon had the boats rigged and ready . I took on the briefing again mainly because I wanted to mention the haloween event and catch up on how everyones knowledge is progressing .
Jaso and Guy set a reaching course in what we worked out was roughly n/w/n winds at around 4/6 knots which as usual at times moved west then back north so the buoys were moved around a bit but in general everyone coped . As usual thanks to Jade , Harvey, Reece , Tristan for taking some new sailors out for a sail even if there was the occassional capsize and also thank to Taylah who taught a new sailor in the shallows which obviously helped her sore legs ? why the sore legs well she walked and ran on saturday in a fundraiser for cancer for nearly 9 hours so well done Taylah. I dont always do this but I noticed one of our new sailors who has only been sailing solo for a couple of months really doing well with the set early courses so well done Gemma keep up the good work.
10.30 am Youth Training
Our Youth training group has expanded with the purchase by several members of Open Bic Skiffs bringing our fleet to 9 plus one laser at this time so we are getting a good fleet of keen young sailors out there learning the inns and outs of sailing .Most of these sailors were at yepoon and we could tell that six days of training and racing certainly made a difference especially in attitude and also skill levels . We are now at briefings exploring such things as sailing step ladders using wind gusts , positioning in the boat and of course tacks and gybes . Our course enade up sailing from a red mark at the club to the outer port mark near the canal so roughly upwind in a south direction and then broadreach on the return at around 6knots . Usually Harvey is the best but Reece showed everyone how to do the downwind whith his boat healing to windward to gain more boat speed and it looked really good to me . The bulk of the group struggled a bit at first on the upwind but after a couple of laps everyone was keeping their sails on and doing less tacks to get to the mark. Finally we had a talk about return to shore as quite a few boats crashed on return instead of turning to the wind and stopping the boat and jump out and hold the boat so guess what they will all be reminded of on their next sail..
1.30 pm Open Racing
With the wind turning n/e with an occasional swing more east we used the north course with a start down at runners and a top mark at the top of soverign and a rounding at the entre between ephriam and soverign .
The wind was really consistant at around 8/10 knots and with a close close reach start it was perfect for a quick getaway with Ross getting a blinder against the full rigs . There were only three boats with Ross being joined by Nic and Tom in full rigs while I convinced Ross to sail radial just to have reasonable speed against the full rigs which he did at first but he did over time loose ground especially when he tried continuous gybes downwind ??? and I am still waiting for the reason why . Tom beat Nic by one second over the line probably because they were trying to sail each other away from the finish line then had to gybe accross once they realised that they were about to sail past the finish boat . Ross we believe won on time handicap because of what the guys were doing which was lucky for him because his gybing really did put him behind and yes both charlie and I had some queries for him back on shore
