Firstly we should mention not only our junior and youth sailors but also all the parents who took the time to travel all the way to Yepoon so their kids could compete in the Training and Regatta with a special thanks to Kelly and Scott for helping organize the paradise point sailing club team . I have heard plenty of stories about the event unfortunately starting with Tristan suffering a green stick fracture of his wrist the night before practice started and even though he tried to sail with a cast it wasnt possible but there is always next year mate ! Our team did really well starting with the green fleet with Harvey coming third and Reece , Xavier and Laya all showing massive improvement through the three days of training then racing . Laya even recieved an award for determination and never giving up.
Daniel and Jade in open fleet also finished inside the top ten including jade tearing a sail and having to borrow a sail from Bevan but still finishing 7th and 8th while Ross in 4.7 finished 12th in his very competitive fleet , Now the word is out in the sailing community that P.P.S.C.has some great talent on the way up the sailing ladder so well done everyone I am very proud of you all.
8.30 am Juniors
The day started with light winds and scattered cloud so reasonable sailing conditions so everyone soon had their boats rigged and we were off to briefing which I presented for a change as our team of instructors were all to chicken to take it on . While at the white board I noticed these young sailors with a bit of prompting wer more involved than previously with some very good answers to our standard set of questions .With the winds roughly out of the w/n/w at around 2/5 knots the start crew slowly set a course to match the wind conditions and we also allowed gybing with I must admit pretty good results including Xavier who was really nailing the gybes with smooth transitions from side to side and good boat speed . There was the odd scream from a certain boat while the new captain was learning to steer apparently it had something to do with too much speed ? here,s a tip girls screaming doesnt slow a sailboat down but letting the main off does !! . We did pull the pin a little bit early as a squall came through although it wasnt so much the wind it was more the really cold rain buy all in all a great sailing morning.
10.30 am Youth Training
This class is really taking on some purpose especially now that our yepoon sailors are back at the club and also with three sailors in the bic,s recieving their own boats ( Reece , Harvey , Tristan ) so everyone was keen to get on the water . I again did the briefing mainly as Charlie still hadnt fully woken up ( late night ) so as I was in charge I threw in some technical stuff just to see the confused looks while they tried to understand things like apparent wind effect. We set a really difficult course across the outgoing tide with basically an upwind and broadreach course . Daniel and Harvey plus Ross were allowed to sail south for a challenging work back towards the club and with the wind shifting and dropping off it was certainly a challenge . Our new bic group did struggle somewhat buy in general they got the idea with some help from the safety boat well except for charlie who was still not quite awake . I tried to concentrate on close hauled and mainly worked with Laya , Xavier and Reece and Iam pretty sure everyone was sick of hearing the word up up by the end . Things were actually going fine until Daniel sailed back and decided he was bored so he stood up and sailed so you guessed it everyone started standing up and so what happems in light winds when you stand up well you go backwards !!! Thanks Dan .
