Hi Everyone;
We had another great week followed by a great weekend (a bit more wind would be nice) Saturday afternoon skills sore Rob, Jim, Me and young Charlie out there with a nice e/s/e of around 8/10 knots, Charlie even had his first go in a 4.7 and did very well pity he went back to his old tacking style on Sunday in the Bic racing (hows the head Charlie you have to remember to duck when Gybing).

The club is preparing for a major repair which is the replacement of our cage roof frame, we have got really good quotes for the new beams and brackets so it looks like the weekend of the 21/22 Sept will be the chosen date. The roof is a priority as the support beams a badly rusted and it will only take one good blow and it will collapse so definitely it needed doing. Email me if you can Help Out on the weekend: ppscinc@bigpond.com

Sunday Juniors 8.30 ;

With the weather starting to warm up we are starting to see a few of last summers kids returning with the likes of Milly and Harry arriving on Sunday and picking up where they left off last summer. Again we had a couple of new kids have a try as well and although the winds were light they said they had a good time, there was even a few hardy souls who decided to have a few capsizes at the end so summer must be coming.

Sunday10.30 Juniors ;

As whit the learner class we are starting to see a few faces returning with the warmer weather with Dallas returning (Broken Arm) Kayla and Nick. Luckily the wind had increased a bit from the early session so I decided they should all do some racing so with beach starts the go and lots of current we managed to get three practice races in with  9 Teras 1 Bic and a laser out there. Patrick was in the Bic and did well for his first go in a slippery boat and Mark found out that lasers don’t sail themselves especially when you don’t work the sail. With numbers like that I better get a few more Tera,s out as well as the odd laser. As with the early class I think it might be time for a few of the 10.30 people to maybe step up to 1.30 racing!

Bic Racing;

Well it was down to Dylan, Luka and Charlie to fly the flag for the race group with Michael missing and Sienna sick. We set a close reach and broad reach return with a lot of current so race one was a bit of a long affair with everyone misreading the effect of the outgoing tide. With the help of the coach boat we did manage some reasonable starts and although the were a bit late each time at least this week the actually sailed to mark A unlike last week which we won't mention any further. I have to say the best of the group and even though he didn’t win any race (2 in each) Dylan sailed exceptionally well considering the weight advantage both Luka (weighs nothing)  and Charlie (remember to duck). Preparations are underway for these guys to head for Port Stephens in January for the national titles so all this race experience is invaluable.

Open Racing :

Well judging by the conversations on the beach after racing it seems that more than one person was over the line on Sunday with a windward start but a pushing outgoing tide. Don't worry everyone a will be the starter next week and you will definitely know if you are early. There was also a bit of a slip with the finish line, Ted came to tell me he thought that there was one lap to go only to turn around and find John Pring passing the finish line buoy with several people in hot pursuit but never fear I will set the times accordingly now I know who finished where compared to those I managed to get times for. Considering the conditions (tide) we set the course in our channel with some windward leeward and triangles , there must have been a bit more wind down there as John was home in less than 50 minutes. The club has been approached by the QLA to run a race day as part of the traveller series and we are at present looking at a date in March 2014 we will keep you all posted on that one.

Hi Everyone,

What a great weekend again with sunny skies and good winds especially on Sunday. It looks like we have finally finished with the rain although its still a bit nippy in the mornings.

Sunday Juniors8.30 class;
Sunday Juniors was held in 3 to 5 knot winds with only a small group of juniors attending with everyone enjoying the conditions and even a couple of on purpose capsizes , not real sure about the capsizes as the water is still chilly, at least the sun was shining. We had a couple of new people again who thoroughly enjoyed their first sailing experience.

Hats of to the girls Lilly and Sienna 2 who made it look easy and I don’t think it will be long before they are up in the 10.30 session well done girls.

 Sunday Juniors 10.30 class; Again we only had a small group in this session with the wind picking up to around 8knots . After some around the buoys practice we set the group of down the channel to the next canal and then back to a buoy over near Ephriam this way that could practice on their upwind and broad reaching which I have to admit was a bit of a challenge at first especially the upwind but they all finally mastered the course with both India and Mark showing the way. The biggest problem we had was with a large amount of boat traffic with a couple of people in tinnies being the worst offenders with a complete disregard for on water courtesy. I believe a father who was teaching his son up the beach caught up with one boat and laid the law down about safety and rules, we didn’t see them again after that.

Club Racing ; The open race was held in 8 to 12 knots e/s/e winds with a few windward leeward sections combined with a couple of triangles just to make it interesting we even had a few of the BIC sailors out in radials giving it a go in bigger boats. There were two races on the day with the following results:

1 Peter Fell

2 Andrew Todd

3 Roger Margot

Race two

1 Peter Fell

2 Andrew Todd

3 John Pring

Bic racing; Well what a day for the BIC fleet we lined them up for a great start in race one with the first mark a straight line to Ephriam only to see them all bear away and head for the bridge? it was to much for the start crew and we called them all back and tried it again but again they sailed away from the buoy despite a lot of yelling and arm waving from the start boat which achieved only minimum success. Race two was a vast improvement but still there was a lot of arm waving and head hanging on the start boat. I suppose there is always next week hopefully with no birthday parties the day before. While on the Bic fleet I have asked Aidan Verstoep if he would like to take over the training of the fleet which he has enthusiastically accepted so from now on he and i will be working the group towards the Port Stephens Regatta.

Reminder: I have been asked by our membership controller to just remind everyone that memberships and storage fees are now overdue so for anyone who has forgotten this years fees either contact us by email our catch up on the weekend you can download the relevant forms on the club website.

CU ALL on the water next weekend!

Hi Everyone,
Well what a great weekend with Sunny skies and even a decent breeze on Sunday for racing. I even managed to get on the water both days which included a sail with Michael, Charlie, Jack and Michelle on Saturday which was a bit of a challenge with light winds and lots of current and then I even managed to line up for the race on Sunday minus a wind indicator and a course map?

I also had a visit from one of my old instructors who is now based in France and was in Australia to visit family and look for sponsors for her next yachting challenge which is the mini transat series starting in France later this year , its seat of the pants sailing with only a GPS and VHF aids (no computers ?) I wish you good luck and safe sailing Katrina and don’t forget to keep in touch.

Sunday Juniors;

Our early juniors class had 12 budding junior sailors who had the dubious honour of trying to sail in very light and shifty conditions with both Pieter and myself constantly moving the buoys to cope with the ever changing wind direction . There were a couple of standout performances from Jonah , Millie and even Riley and Ryan (twins) sailed well and had no arguments well done everyone . Oh and I should mention that buttercup (Coby) has now changed his nickname to cupcake? Not sure which one is the worst maybe we will have to come up with a better one.

Sunday 10.30 Juniors;

We again had a good roll up for this advanced session with 8 boats on the water with improving conditions wind wise so we set up a broad reach and close haul return course with gybing and tacking being the focus on the day . The conditions had improved from the early class with the wind settling in the n/e at around 4/6 knots so it was perfect conditions for everyone to get out there and work on their sailing skills. I saw good improvements from Patrick, India and Finn who had his first go in a 4.7 laser which definitely suits his size much better than the Tera. Well done everyone we might even see some of you racing at 1.30 soon.

Club Racing;

Again we had a good turnout for racing which now includes the advanced juniors race series so all together there were 20 boats out there at the start line jockeying for position.

The race started in winds of around 6/8 knots with plenty of holes which I for one managed to find on a regular basis but as the race moved on the wind built into a reasonable e/n/e wind of around 10 to 15 knots which meant that we all had some good reaches and close reaching. Tom Slocombe was flying but he told me later that he made two mistakes , one he followed the wind surfers and two he wrote the course to small so he couldn’t read his own writing and went the wrong way. The guys and girls in front of me had a great race which I tried to join in with but I just couldn’t seem to get onto the back of them I would get close but then the would get away again which culminated in me trying to hard on the last turn and going for a swim and yes it was cold. I have to say the most improved performance I say on the day was Thomson Hand who had the 4.7 really wound up, good work Thomson!

Hi Everyone ,

Well what a turnaround weather wise this weekend with fine and sunny conditions and the occasional
breeze as well.

Had a sail with Dylan and Sienna 1 on Saturday in the club 470 as part of their sail training and I have to say the both did well with Dylan looking very comfortable at the helm and also Sienna when she concentrated. Sienna also learnt that sound carries well over water just ask her about her comment regarding another sailor! Who she thought wouldn’t hear, ah well a lesson learnt.

I had a great day anyway with them as the learnt all about a new multi sail boat which included a new Sienna phrase when tacking the Jib (RELEASE THE BABY)

Sunday Juniors;
Sunday Juniors was held in three to five knots with absolutely perfect sunshine and despite some trouble with the current the had a good time on the water. We again had a couple of new people turn up to have a look and try sailing thanks to being invited by some of the regular Juniors . Jonah and Corey had a bit of trouble with the conditions but with a bit of help with improving their tacking ( facing the front ) they both picked up the wind a lot easier and practiced just in front of the club. There was a new nickname for Coby as well but I think we will let Coby tell everyone what it is as its another one of his own creations!

Sunday Racing;
Firstly Sunday 10.30 racing finished for some of our juniors who are now starting their own race series in conjunction with our 1.30 club race group, this is being done to not only increase their challenge but to help them when they travel to other venues to compete in the future. We had a large group on the day with strong outgoing current and variable wind speeds so I decided to send them under the bridge and up to Sovereign Island then back under the bridge to a buoy below the club, I didn’t tell them it was a challenging course I just let the have a go and the results were very good with people like Patrick, Nick, Finn and India coping well with the challenge in amongst the more experienced sailors. well done everyone!

Club Racing;
Our winter series race was held in wind conditions that to say the least were challenging with a good breeze one minute and then either shifting or stopping all together and definitely not helped by the tide which was on the last of the run out and then starting the run in . some people would manage to get ahead only to be becalmed while those behind caught up and then they stopped as well ( ah the joys of light wind sailing ).

Now I have to apologise to Maurie for not mentioning him coming first in race one last week thank god for the misses Maurie who quite rightly pointed this out to me yesterday , my only excuse was that I wasn't at the finish in race one so it slipped my mind . We wont mention the capsize at the one minute by another sailor ( jb ) yesterday although he did get it up quick and still managed a good start at least the water is getting warmer.

Lastly yes we did shorten the course for everyone with absolutely no wind with the occasional slight puff and trying to beat an incoming tide as well , the finish line was set right beside the gutter that lead back into our channel so everyone could drift home and only when everyone was on shore did the wind come back as usual. Oops I almost forgot one of our new boys trying his hand at racing BICs has learnt the value of putting the bung in because when you don’t it fills up with water and wants to fall over? Apparently he had one of those bungs that unscrews itself yeah sure Michael.

See you on the water next weekend
