Hi Everyone , Well it finally happened after weeks of light winds perfect for learner sailors mother nature decided to make last Sunday a bit of a challenge with gusty west based winds making life interesting for morning juniors .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors ; With 12 junior sailors turning up for this lesson we spent some time after rigging discussing what everyone should expect wind wise with a predominately westerly wind pattern which was periods of consistent winds and the occasional gust ? Most importantly I stressed no gybes due to the winds being the strongest that most of our juniors had ever experienced in their short sailing careers . So what happened ? you guessed it most everyone went out and gybed so their were quite a few boats going around in circles and a bit of panic amongst some of the sailors . We did bring a few crews back in and slowly went through the tacking process until we got everyones confidence back and then allowed them to sail in close just for fun . The best on the day was Charlie who with her crew and the safety crews help sailed around the course without any drama,s so well done Charlie >
10.30 Sunday Juniors ; By 10.30 the winds had become even more gusty and with only Addy and Kaleb rigging up we took our time setting up and would you believe the wind turned s/s/e and settled in around 10 knots .
Addy was a bit nervous but with her dad and I following she slowly gained confidence and managed to sail across to the other side of the broadwater and back handling both the gusts and the lulls well even if she was scowling at us for making her go so far . Kaled went of with Dallas in a laser and aftrer a few laps with Dal Kaled took over himself and promptly capsized but he did manage to get his boat up and with Dallas following him around the course giving instruction he did very well for his first true laser sail .
Open Racing ; Back next weekend
Maintenance day Saturday 19/8/17 ; Firstly thanks to everyone who turned up and helped us tidy the place up before the summer rush Dallas Casey Charlie Andrew Peter Greg Tom Addy Tina the doherty family Caiden and his dad . Casey reset the whole storage shelf , Tom and Greg replaced the verandah posts and fixed the shelves in the canteen , Andrew , Peter and Charlie worked on Public nuisance , Addy and Caiden painted , Tina cleaned the canteen , Brendan and Dallas sorted the mezzanine and all the kids pitched in with the sail loft and the doherty family worked on cleaning shower repairs and general maintenance and me ? well I re manufactured some steel shelves and generally helped out .
Rescue boat Endorsement : With the weather getting a bit rough it was perfect for this course which involves everything from radio procedures , first aid to on water recovery and rescue training . The group included Glen Casey Pat Dallas Glen and Charlie who each took turns at each safety procedure with overall good results with everyone now having a better understanding of what can happen and the appropiate responses .
