Hi Everyone sorry the news letter has been missing since before easter but unfortunately I caught covid on my easter trip to sydney which put me in hospital and then in isolation at my sisters in sydney . The whole experience took two weeks before I felt reasonably human again and then last week with everything I had to catch up on I totally forgot the news letter , so lets see how the memory is !
Firstly there was no sailing last weekend with everything cancelled as there was a strong wind warning current and the wind speed at 7am at the club was gusting twenty knots so definitely not a good day for juniors . We did have a few parents turn up but that was because they hadnt checked the facebook page , website or attempted to book in on saturday afternoon where they would have been warned it might be cancelled but at least they all know now . For everyones information once a strong wind warning is issued our club insurance becomes void but more important than that its just not a safe environment for the kids
8.30 am Sunday Juniors 16/4/23
With school holidays just about finished we didnt expect a large group which usually means that we get swamped but for a change it was actually a small group for a change . The winds were light roughly from the north and the current was heading toward the seaway so guy set up a reach across the waterway and despite tellying everyone to head more into the current we ended up with quite a few boats drifting south which kept the safety boat busy coaching or towing people back but at least they got on the water . Tristan did another great job at the briefing with his overall presentation becoming more fluid he even had me explaining the weather chart to him in what all the wiggly lines meant and what effect the Hand L marked on the map meant so look out we will soon have another weather man in the club .
10.30 Youth Training
This group is slowly growing with 10 boats on the water including Tristan in the laser . After a lenghty briefing we sent everyone out on what was basically a reach but with a lot of current making life really tricky and to just make it ahrder we made the club mark the gybe mark which certainly tested everyone early well except for Harvey who was soon nailing both ends .. Lana has actually improved heaps in recent times and was looking really comfortable on the water as was Lalle Laya Hanna and leisel who all listened well especially at the gybe mark and were all doing really smooth gybes with speed before the end of the session . Even though it looked a bit of a handful Tristan in the laser managed to get the boat through both tacks and gybes as the power to sailor weight ratio shouldnt really work but I suppose when you are keen it works .To pick the best on the day was not possible as truly everyone sailed well and are showing real improvement , even not letting go of the rudder in the gybes is becoming redundant so well done everyone .
1.30 pm Open Racing
Due to a mix up in the calendar we ran both the open fleet and our Youth Racing fleets together with both groups using the same start line down in front of runaway bay marina . Daniel and I looked after the openj guys while charlie , Taylah and Jade looked after the juniors . The open fleet sailed the north course up to soverign while the Youth sailors sailed to the canal and back in our channel . The winds speeds were around 10/12 knots for the youth sailors from the north east so it was a perfect upwind downwind course . Harvey after calling starboard on the laser fleet at the start ( and he was right ) just took off while the rest of the group struggled on the upwind with the odd capsize but charlie was there to coach the back on course . The open fleet picked up more wind in the main channel with wind towards the end reaching around 17 knots . It was a close race with greg leading over tom and nic but then a bad gybe rounding caused gregs mainsheet to get caught on the boom ( I didnt know greg could swear that loud ) which allowed Tom to sneak ahead and come over the line first . Roger had a bad day and retired early while Lance went to the wrong mark as syc were using our area and he got confused but he still managed to finish being the last boat home . So where was Steve well his boat finally gave up so he spent the afternoon patching up the masy tube as its worn through the bottom of the boat , there,e even a rumour he might be buying a new hull ?
