Hi Everyone , Firstly I would like to remind everyone that due to all of our Instructors being away on the 19th and 26th of September there will be no 8.30 am Juniors as the Department of Sport and Recreation and Australian Sailing rules state that for every six students there must be one qualified Instructor so with only me not travelling to Yepoon for the Youth Regatta it has to be cancelled for those two weeks . We will be running 10.30 class but this session will be restricted to a maximum of six sailors and no beginners will be accepted for the two weeks , to book for 10.30 class please check with me at the office .
PRICING : After nearly thirteen Years of our 8.30 am juniors being priced at $15.oo per person we will as at Sunday the 4th of September raising the price to seventeen ( $17.00 ) dollars and $70.00 for Bulk sailing books mainly due to the price of fuel which has seen a large increase in recent times . The club will also now be giving everyone the option of either paying by cash as usual or card swipe as most people now pay by card or D/D .
8.30 am Sunday Juniors
With the sun shining and light winds it was looking a perfect day for learning to sail and despite no one booking on saturday for sunday morning we ended up with 8 young sailors signed on for the class . With mainly our Bic,s being rigged we ended up with all our Bics being rigged which hasnt happened for some time so consequentally we found a few parts missing so there was a bit of jury rigging going on to get everything ready as its seems at least one vang assembly has disappeared but we have ordered a new one which will hopefully arrive in a couple of weeks . So how was the sailing well the winds were originally from the west so Ross went through the briefing on that premis so you can guess what happened yep it went south but everyone soon adapted to the new course that Jason and Guy set and with the wind speed around 6/7 knots solid it was perfect for some tacking and gybing with some really good gybing from Xavier and Laya and also from Grace well when she wasnt capsizing !!! but well done for staying out grace especially without a wetsuit which apparently Mum has decided to now purchase but apparently whitties didnt have one to fit so I suggested Rubber Jungle who make them to fit and do an excellent job.
10.30 am Youth Training ;
Well we did our usual thing and started with Rules focusing on some right of way and one or two flags and with Jade having the blue book at hand everyone is generally getting the idea that yes we need to know the rules .
Tristan actually asked what a trapezoid course is and also what a gated course is ? so I drew them on the white board so you had to be there or you can look it up on line . The wind had come up a bit but still roughly south at around 8/10 knots so we originally used the 8.30 course with tacking and gybing before sending everyone off to the green channel marker . Taylah and Roos were off and running especially upwind followed by some very good downwinds with even Harvey just flying in the Bic . His off sider in Tristan was also getting around well that is until one strong gust got him right near the bridge pilon and he went in so a short tow was needed but even with his wetty on he came back shivering so off to shore he went . Jade and Daniel as usual just cruised and are mainly using 10.30 for Yepoon training .
1.30 pm Open Racing
Withe the winds increasing and shifting S/E at around 15 knots we decided to set a course in our channel as it was predicted to increase . We set at at the x mark down near runners with B mark over near the pine trees  to make at triangle course with the start off the club pontoon . Everyone looked very keen and with eight boats at the line it was certainly busy especially when Ross caught the fleet napping by starting on starboard while the rest started on port and he even forced a few people to tack with a very loud starboard call . The winds started to increase as usual after the start but our two Bic,s were right up there with the Lasers after both getting a good start . On the first downwind Tom had emerged in front and throughout the race steadily increased his lead and was uncatchable while Jade did the same in the Bic,s with Dan slowly dropping back apparently he should have checked his rig? before going out . Matt went for a swim near the green but was fine righting his laser because he was standing on the bottom yep thats what the green mark means Matt ( shallow water on the eastern side ) . So how did Tom get so far in front after starting at the back end of the fleet he used his local knowledge and sailed up the western side out of the current while everyone else went east  so a lesson learned people.
