8.30 am Sunday Juniors ;
Well with the news of the early release from lockdown moved from Sunday to Friday afternoon I soon had text and phone enquiries for Sunday Juniors and the first to turn up were some first timers looking very nervous about their first go at sailing but with the help of our great group of assistant instructors they soon had the new sailors rigged and ready to go .
With bright sunny skies and winds around 2/4 knots we soon had everyone on the water while the instructors in Ross and Daniel took the first timers for a sail and Taylah had her two girls going through the basic steering and tacking near the shore everyone was soon getting stuck in while the more experienced sailors were cruising across the broadwater under the charge of Jason and Andrew in Sarah and Charlie and Jade in Banana boat ! Tristan ( captain capsize ) didnt yes didnt capsize all session but dad said it was because every time he went to there was this voice on the water just saying loudly TRISTAN!! yep it was Charlie . I was going to pick the best sailor but all in all everyone sailed well and most of all everyone came in smiling.
10.30 Youth Training;
This group of sailors are getting very accomplished in their sailing skills so it is becoming a challenge to put them out their on the water and challenge them all to sail to conditions . So what was last Sundays Challenge well we just said sail to the red port marker down past the canal and turn east across the gutter below Ephriam sounds easy right well the first part was but I neglected to tell them that when they turned east it was no sail zone so the thinking hats had to go on to sail across the gutter into the main channel while avoiding the sand bars . Once over there they then had to sail up to the top of Ephriam and in the Lasers Taylah showed the way with a perfectly flat boat on the upwind that Ross ( Abby missing due to toe operation ) had no answer too her speed while Jade and Daniel challenged each other while their coaches gave enchouragement ! well i talked to Jade and Charlie yelled at Dan , the best part for these two was the down wind where we got them to practice covering each other . Lincoln in the last Bic struggled a bit due to a too loose outhaul so next week he has promised me that he is going to pull it on more !
1.30 pm Open Racing;
Wit an ever increasing outgoing current and winds only around 6 knots from the N/N/E I decided to set a course in the main channel starting at the top of Ephriam with a near the second green mark off Soverign and the bottom mark near the main channel X near Runners . With Ross as helper due to a dodgy knee and Charlie on the ski we soon had everyone lined up for the start which was well contested with the whole fleet of starters basically going over the line in one pack on starboard tack which went well until everyone was forced to tack to port to go east and the current just took everyone south forcing everyone to sail to the sandbank before tacking back . In the Lasers Nick got out in front with greg john b and steve in hot pursuit while Roger and Taylah were close behind . Talyah slowly fell back against the radials but still sailed well while Greg caught up with Nick but he kept covering him which was good to watch until Greg finally cracked him and pulled a lead of about a 100 mtrs then Steve got some luck as well wit wind shifts and moved past Nick but still all in all a great race in the difficult conditions . I better not forget our Bic sailors so at first Daniel, who had the better start sailed away from Jade but her experience and really good sailing angle skills which had her sailing way in the sand banks to the east which set her up to lay the A mark in one tack and ended up right on Daniels tail . Her downwinds according to Charlie were in his words just smoking fast and she just sailed away finishing three minutes in front and yes her coach was very proud . We did shorten by one lap as the wind was dying but not the current and everyone was starting to look a bit tired including the start boat crew .
