8.30 am Sunday Juniors
Well we certainly know its winter as our early morning numbers are very low with only a few die hard sailors turning up for this session and they are even wearing wetsuits available from the club . Last sunday the conditions were actually good for the boys with roughly westerly winds at around 3/5 knots and an incoming tide with high water around 2.00 pm so launching the boats was a bit sticky with an excess of mud especially around the ramp but the boys were soon away with Jade and Daniel in charge so it was perfect safety boat practice for them as well . We decided that the boys could sail again down south but this time all the way to the red channel marker and back up on basically a reach . The boys are improving each week and they certainly showed it on sunday with hardly a flapping sail and from what daniel told me really improved boat speed and concentration so well done boys and the instructors .
10.30 am Youth Training
Ever since the Mid Winter cup in june our youth sailors are steadily improving each week now all we have to do is get them to ask more questions at their briefing ! With the winds out of the N/W at around 2-6 knots so yes very tricky I set a course with an upwind and down wind only and as I said especially near the bridge it was very flukey which did catch everyone out with the occasional collision and the odd drift under the bridge but everyone who ended up there sailed out on their own . We really worked on sail set and body position as nearly everyone on the upwind was sitting too far back and on the downwind not letting the sail out far enough but with a great deal of instruction form charlie and I we did manage to improve everyone,s general sailing . Once we attained our goal of improving these to sailing angles we let them all sail off down to the green channel marker and back up on a nice steady reaching wind with Harvey just cruising and Gemma, Zach getting closer to him every sail . Our most improved sailor on the day out of Torsen , Halle and Leila was leila who I have to say sailed the conditions the best I have ever seen he sail we just need to tighten up the upwind but she is now letting the sail out more on the down winds so no capsizing and yes she even had a wetsuit on!
1.30 Pm open Racing
As far as numbers go in this session we are running at about half our normal number of competitors mainly due to people taking a break for winter but also a few like me on the long term injured list but at least Iam on the mend with both my shoulder and ankle improving slowly every day.
With the winds moving around from basically the west and the winds becoming consistant around 6-8 knots we set a start near the canal and two buoys down near runners to make a triangle course . Everyone started well with greg and roger soon out the front which turned into a seesaw battle while tom after an ordinary start tried valiantly to catch up with Greg and Roger but just couldnt bridge the gap so he finished third with Trisha pulling out and lance having one of those days we would all rather forget . So who won out of greg and roger well I wiill tell you it was close with just five seconds between them at the finish with greg sneaking home in a close first place so well done everyone .
I finally had all the prize winners from the Open Series 2022 present so after early issues with finances due to water bills being wrong then the trophy people loosing our order Wwe finally had the opportunity to hand out both trophies and prizes . In first place in the club championship Was Greg Phillips and in Second place was Tom Slocombe and in Third Place was Roger Margot so well done guys just show consistently showing up for races does pay off . This year we are working on having the season presentation at the Christmas Party on 17 december as I have simplified the race recording process so it will be easier to do the final results .
