Sunday June 5th, 2016

Hi Everyone, well to answer the question as to whether we ran Juniors on Sunday after Saturdays weather, yes we did as it was a complete reversal of Saturdays weather except for the wind .

8.30am Sunday Juniors

With blue skies and early light winds, we managed to entice 14 Juniors to this lesson. With winds from the west and sometimes a bit gusty around 12 knots, it was at times a bit of a challenge with a few people occasionally doing circles in the gusts (shouldn't let go of the steering right guys). The Laser crews had a lot of fun sailing out wide with Pat, Casey and Tianna in charge while the juniors had steering practice. Generally it all went well for a while but with the gusty conditions there were the inevitable capsizes right Tianna and Casey ?

10.30am Sunday Juniors

With the winds picking up to around 14 knots in the gusts, we sent the group out with just a basic course to see how they coped with the increasing gusty conditions, which everyone seemed to revel in with some quick reaching rides and Yahooing !!! Then we threw a soccer ball in amongst them with the object of pick up and pass while sailing back to the yellow buoy. There was certainly a lot of maneuvering and surprisingly hardly any collisions, despite everyone trying to fit into the one space to retrieve the ball. We will definitely try it again as not only is it fun its great for skills training as well.

Open Racing

With only our Junior sailors on hand as the adults were either injured, away or it was looking a bit gusty for some, it was up to the 4.7 Lasers and the Open Bic crews to line up for the start. This proved very interesting, as from the time everyone left the beach to the start sequence the wind increased from around 15/17 knots to 20/25 knots from the west which made it a very busy start line.

Daniel in the Bic struggled in the conditions, which are the strongest he has ever sailed in and finally had to be towed home. Charlie reveled in the winds and just took off, while Jonah sailed the best I have ever seen him sail in conditions which are normally way above his weight capabilities, well done mate !

Dallas sailed well in the Laser, coming home first with Pat a good second and Casey third after struggling with the extra speed and light weight of my Laser, but again I take my hat off to her because despite many capsizes she still finished the course all be it very tired. Well done guys in very testing conditions.
