Hi everyone , well finally we had our presentation for both the club Open championship and our Youth club championship last sunday after racing , we usually have it at the beginning of february but this year the trophies were late as were the individual prizes so in the end it was a mad scramble to change the prizes as thel suppliers had forgotten to send the originals ? just what you dont need at the beginning of the year.
Our building extension is tantalisingly close with another council application form completed and submitted this week and finally we had our try sailing introduction day at Varsity Lakes last saturday and it was a great success with over 50 people signing up to have a sail , Thank you to Tom and his volunteers and our volunteers Andrew , Abby , Charlie who all helped to make it a great day even if it did start raining at 12noon slowing things up a bit but all in all a good start for Varsity Lakes Sailing.
8.30 am Sunday Juniors:
Well with the broadwater finally looking back to nearly normal water colour and the sun shining we soon had 18 budding junior sailing signed on and rigging boats with a mixture of Teras Lasers and the taz rigged and ready for a morning on the water The wind was out of the S/E at around 5 knots so it was perfect for a long reaching course over toward the bridge , It was really satisfying to watch even the new sailors managing to come to grips with the steering while their crew worked the mainsheet resulting in some great tacking and good general boat speed . But you guessed it after about forty minutes the question was being asked ? yep when can we capsize so with about 10 minutes to go we relented and let them all capsize and cool down resulting in the usual chaos and a lot of laughing !
10.30 am Training:
with the winds slowly increasing and swinging east we set an upwind and down wind course in front of the club and as an added extra we also used the first green channel marker as an added leg . The best in the upwind was Jade in the bic who really had her boat wound up to windward and just scooted around both the windward leeward course and the extended course around the green . Abby wasnt able to sail as she had a nasty fall at Varsity Lakes ( slipped on wet clay ) on saturday so we gave her another power boat driving lesson while we followed everyone around the course which was a definite challenge as there was a lot of boat and jetski traffic on the water so it was a definite case of eyes peeled as some boat drivers are really bad boat drivers and lets not start on jetski drivers . Jade and Mason did so well that they put their names in for racing in the afternoon so well done people .
1.30 pm Open Racing:
With the winds really turning east we set a course start line down near runners with a over towards crab island then of to B at the top of ephriam and then a mark  C in between the islands . It was a hotly contested start with everyone lining up at the pin end but no one broke the line so it was a case of flag drop and off we go . Greg broke away early with Tom and Peter in hot pursuit but at one stage Greg just somehow pulled away opening a large gap . Chris was out on his latest purchase a 191 laser and was going well and even ben looked to have released last weeks handbrake and had much better boat speed while Steve  Matt Lance and Trisha were all sailing well . The battle up front was interesting as first Tom and then Peter slowly pulled gregs gap back but the just couldnt catch him in the end and he sailed over the line first with Tom and Peter filling the places. opps if forgot at the start the conditions were start of the outgoing tide and winds e/s/e at around 12 knots yes you guessed it just perfect .
1.35 pm Youth Race :
We only had two competitors in Jade and Mason on the day and it was their first day of the racingt experience so as you might guess there were a lot of nerves coming up to the start line but they both managed respectable starts with a little help from Abby in the safety boat . We set a basic windward leeward course for their first race with port roundings . Jade again took off upwind as did mason but he was not quite as tight with Jade rounding first but in her excitement she capsized allowing Mason to take the lead but to her credit she soon had the boat back up and running and slowly overhauled Mason to finish first over the line . All in all a great first try bat racing.
