Our new club shirts are a great hit with many being sold last weekend and now the girls have found the hats they will be for sale at the canteen as well . Just a reminder also that next weekend the 30/10/21 the canteen will be closed as Kelly has another commitment so if in future you would like to volunteer your time on a sunday just let us know and Kelly can show you the ropes .
8.30 AM SUNDAY JUNIORS ,
After the previous weekend where we literally were smashed with not only our usual sailors but also a large group of first timers we were hoping that things would go back to normal with between 12 -16 sailors signing on and yes we managed to get these numbers which just makes it a bit easier to spend time with everyone . We soon had boats rigged and with the winds coming from roughly the west it was perfect to set a reaching course straight up and down the broadwater but it was a bit tricky with some pretty good bullets coming through which especially wound up the Bics with Harvey and Tristan relishing the conditions and I even saw Tristan pick up an especially strong bullet and he just took off with spray everywhere coming off his boat . Aidan and Alex went for a trip under the bridge but Jason soon had them back cruising around the course . We did have a few small breakages on the day but they were only minor well except for Tristan who managed to nearly bend his tiller extension at right angles , apparently one gust got him and he fell out backwards taking the extension with him been there and done that myself . As always I would like to thank all the assistants and volunteers for the great effort the put in every weekend Jade even sailed a Laser for the first time with two students !
10.30 AM YOUTH TRAINING :
This group is getting harder to give them sailing challenges especially the laser sailors are getting harder and harder to create challengers for on the water let alone our two chief Bic sailors who are even giving the open fleet racers a run for their money at 1.30 . Its looking like we are going to set up a challenge which includes charlie and I competing against them in race starts should be fun , now all I need to do is start the physio on my dodgy knee and probably a couple of practice sails as well.
The main group took of south and ran a course from the canal up to the green mark with Jason in charge while Charlie and I took Tristan and Harvey for their first real training session with lots of tacking and gybing . They both did well and because they are both very keen to learn they actually listened , it was great to see two young boys out there in what sa challenging conditions with gusts , wind shifts and then no wind but the did well as did the main group.
1.30 PM OPEN RACING
With it being a club championship race and Matt requesting an upwind start in westerlies ? we set a start down in front of crab island with the A mark over at the boat ramp next to runaway bay canal and then a reach up to the canal near the club . We had to set the anchor twice because of the current which was absolutely roaring out . As I guessed the start was chaos but no recalls and only a few light bumps between boats which made it a very good controlled start . Jade has been working on her starts and she was right up there with the lasers but unfortunately got gassed and originally had to tack away but she was soon back on course chasing the pack . Greg looked like he was going to be too early so he had to sail done the line but he managed to squeeze in and actually came out in the wind as did Nic who originally sailed away but with the shifty conditions sailed a bit high of A mark and meet the fleet at the turning buoy bugger ! Tom had his usual big moment on the downwind when a nasty gust got him from behind but it was a top save and he went on to slowly catch up with the front runners . Greg led the whole race but nearly lost it twenty feey from the finish when he sailed into a massive hole and the outgoing tide started drifting him away from the line allowing Tom and Michelle to catch up and with Michelle sitting right on a puff over breeze she overtook Tom and just missed getting greg by less than two seconds so my advice paid off for her when I said run the radial not the 4.7. Jade came out on top in the bics and even she at the finish managed to catch a bullet of wind and get away from daniel finishing over a minute in front , all in all agood days racing.
