Mid-winter O'pen BiC Cup update

1/7/2013

THANK YOU ALL THE VOLUNTEERS
Hi Everyone,

If you were looking for the newsletter last week there wasn’t one as besides things being quiet I was flat out with the BiC Cup. Never fear, there is heaps of news form this weekend.

Open Bic Midwinter Cup was held, successfully, at PPSC from 28-30 June 2013.

Before I start the story of the weekends events I would firstly like to thank the steering committee for their tireless work and also all those blue shirted volunteers who helped make the event run so smoothly.

Picture
The event attracted 20 competitors for all over Queensland which included the current female champion Kristen Wadley (sorry if I have spelt it wrong, Kristen ) who was a pleasure to watch in both her sailing skills and friendly attitude.

For the Gold fleet I can only heap praise on everyone from the kids from as far away as Tinaroo to the kids from Brisbane's Oxley sailing club and to our own local sailors who all competed in a friendly but competitive manner over the eight race series.

Picture
There was some hectic start lines out there with everyone jockeying for position resulting in one general recall and some very close calls in other races with boats just on the line at the start.

The tide played a big part with everyone with a lot of frustrated experts ( parents ) on the shore watching their children slide sideways both on the upwind and on the reaches across the channel.

Definitely more tide work needed there! I should also thank you all for being such good competitors in regards to penalties with nothing but praise from the on water Judges.

Along with the Gold Fleet we also had a Silver fleet out there competing amongst the Goldies. Just let me tell you all this important fact: the kids who started the regatta in silver weren’t the kids who completed the regatta. They all started with little knowledge of racing and only a small amount of Bic experience but by the end of the regatta these same children ( youngest seven ) were sailing triangle race courses in winds from as little as two knots to up to fifteen knots. Sure there was a lot of sailing backwards, sailing upside down, hitting marks and each other but what a great achievement to come so far in three days.

There was one moment that has stuck in my mind and that was the first race that one of our most inexperienced Bic sailors actually completed the course and crossed the finish line (great smile Sienna) but that is not taking anything away from the whole group who at times wanted to chuck the towel in but each time they turned around and gave it another go in the next race. Great work Mums and Dad's on the shore giving them some much positive encouragement.

Picture
Last Race

In the last race the winds decided to play havoc with everyone, especially at the finish line with barely enough at times to make headway against the current.
If you are wondering: Gee how did I finally make it over the finish line?, it was the four crew on the finish boat who, I am sure were mentally pushing everyone's boat that last half a meter. There was even a report of one Dad who had to have a lay down on the floor of his boat when his son finally scraped over the line.

Picture
Finally we had the adventure race and freestyle which were the funniest part of the weekend and were held on Sunday morning while we were waiting for the wind.

The adventure race consisted of a race to the sandbar in front of Paradise Point where any form of manual propulsion was allowed with a few people trying so hard that they capsized. Then we had Will and Tallia who thought that they would go faster if they jumped out the back of their boat and started kicking? That didn’t work either!

And to finally round everything off there was the freestyle race with some very interesting freestyle antics with people hanging upside down of the boom, hanging of masts, capsizing while both standing on the transom. Lets' not forget the costumes with wigs , tiara's and hoola skirts the norm. There was even a short Alice Cooper look a like whose wig was virtually down to his knee's. Very funny everyone.

OK everyone that's about it although I am sure there were many more funny moments but lets keep them for next time.

CU on the water!

Autumn Series - Race 10 /16/06/13 and the weekly updates

18/6/2013

Hi Everyone,

Less than two weeks to go to the Open Bic Midwinter Cup with all the final organization and preparations in full swing.
So far, we have 16 entries for the event and we should hopefully round out in the 20's which is what we worked for as a good number for the first of these yearly events. We have people coming from as far away as Cairns and also some from NSW.

Preparations are well under way with the final work day on this Sunday, 23 June, starting at 10.00 am. The work to be completed includes: cleaning, painting, boat removal, kitchen modifications and general tidying up. If you have any spare time come along and I am sure we can find something for you to do.

Junior Sailing
Sunday morning started a bit cool but fine and sunny with light winds. The kids had to work a bit harder to get their boats moving. It was a slow day but it gave everyone the opportunity to either improve their steering or to even have their first go at steering.
Picture
Well done to young Sam who had her first experience at steering with India as crew. I still remember the big smile when she successfully sailed out round the buoy and then sailed the boat back to me (makes standing in the cold water worthwhile).

LAST BUT NOT LEAST WE CANT FORGET Coby who from now on is to be known as
Lolly Pop????      Don’t ask me where it came from it was his choice !

Junior Racing
What can I say, at one stage I came back to shore to ask the parents if the crew out there were really their children? The reason being that in virtually no wind the actually sailed a full reach course sitting forward , leaning in , minimum rudder movement but lots of talking and singing? Well done to Dillon especially for just sailing away from the fleet which I thought was awesome considering he is one of the heaviest out there.
Picture
There was one major drawback to everyone sailing so well without my constant, move forward, keep the rudder still, look at the sail, look where you are going and focus and that was that I actually had to listen to Lachy jabber on in the safety boat.

Cruel punishment guys!  Let's go back to the old ways where I have to constantly be on your case and then I don’t have to listen to Lachy!

Picture
Racing
Sunday racing had a few malfunctions with a timing glitch where the start signal was 15 seconds early [Don’t know, wasn’t on the boat] and a misunderstanding as to where the top marks were to be positioned culminating in everyone going up and down the track a couple of times. The only good thing was we at least had some wind. Not much but some.

Other drama,\'s on the day involved a Riviera catching fire (small and diesel) and drifting over mark A which instigated us being a temporary mark A for the kids.  Later we moved the mark 30 mtrs to the East to clear the possible emergency. Luckily, it all ended with a bit of an anticlimax with Coast Guard VMR and the water police attending and dragging the offender away. I suppose that was at least one less of them out there on Sunday throwing wash everywhere.

A special thanks goes to the boys and their parents from Oxley Sailing Club who came down for the race as part of their preparation for the Bic Regatta. Well done to George Morton coming home first with Tim Meyer from Oxley second and a great battle for the minor placings OH except for Lachy who only realised half way through the race that the bung wasn’t in! I believe I have said this before: before launching your boat CHECK YOUR BOAT.

Well done everyone see you on the weekend !

Autumn Series Race 9 /09-06-13/ and the week behind us

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a good long weekend despite the weather. It was certainly changeable conditions over the three days. I have upgraded my winter clothing by adding new wetsuit pants from Rubber Jungle as that wind was cold on wet legs lately.  If you ever want a good deal on fitted wetsuits go and see Mark and mention the PPSClub and he will look after you.

Picture
Picture
I forgot a very funny story last week involving Tom Slocombe and David Lynch AND the club compressor. Apparently IT had them stumped because when they turned it on, nothing happened. After much tinkering and discussion (apparently 20 minutes elapsed before they decided to seek professional help), they came and asked the expert - me (?).

I told them it wasn’t making any noise because the tank was full, so just needed to be used (?).  Nice one guys I told you I wouldn’t forget it !!!

Junior Sailing

We had three hardy young sailors in our first class which surprised Aidan and I as we thought due to the weather no one would come. Great work Dallas, Spencer and Coby and good sailing by all.

We have also convinced another of the girl sailors to have a go at the BiC with Sienna flying around out there amongst the boys. I will never forget the look in your eyes, Sienna, the first time the BiC took off in a gust totally bugged out. Great work!
Junior race training

We are now BiC training on Saturdays with the Oxley sailing club to both help our guys and the Oxley kids hone their skills before the event. Conditions on the day were a bit testing with a few capsizes and some really good speed reaching (see pics in the GALERY) with George Morton and Tim from Oxley flying side by side back towards the club in approx 16 knots. It was great to watch boys.

Sunday race training was as exciting with winds around 15 knots and everyone showing the speed increases gained over the last few weeks. We had very close racing including a few swims by everyone, which means everyone is trying hard to generate as much speed as possible. That, of course, results in the occasional case of the wobbles followed by a dunking.

Club Racing

Club racing was a two race format on Sunday with both races kept to short courses due to wind speeds approaching thirty knots at time. Race one produced some wild bear away roundings at mark B with boats literally launching themselves down wind. Race two was set as one triangle only, again, due to very choppy conditions. The race competitors opted for this shortened course as conditions were really deteriorating. By the time they all got to the reach it was between 25 to 30 knots which made for a spectacular reach section.

A special mention goes to the girls (Michelle and Trisha) who despite their smaller stature completed both races, especially Trisha, who to my knowledge, has never completed a race in such high winds before.

Open Bic Midwinter cup update

The midwinter cup is already receiving entries and the committee is turning into a well oiled machine with all aspects slowly coming together.

The lease boats are also here thanks to Bevan from BiC who has loaned us six boats to train everyone. All that was needed was just a short drive to Sydney and back .

The volunteer list is growing with over twenty people already submitting their forms with a few more still to come. Will we need that many? YES, as the event is huge.

Don’t forget the Club clean up day on Sunday 23rd June from 10 am.

FYI

Bunnings Barby raised $1019.90 for our Club.

Thanks to all who attended!

Autumn Series Race 8 /02-06-13/ and the week it was

Hi Everyone,

Well another week gone, one event over and one more getting closer.

Firstly thank you to everyone who helped out with the Bunnings Barby on Saturday.

It turned out a great day with reasonable weather and some funny jokes between the crew. Special thanks to Riley and Ryan who, although they could barely see over the counter, were selling plenty of drinks to the hungry customers sometimes whether they wanted one or not.

The next event, the O'pen BiC Midwinter Cup, is starting to take a formal shape (check the link on the club website) with the committee slowly but surely getting all the logistics in place.  The cup Committee meets every Friday and volunteer numbers are slowly growing. If you have decided you want to volunteer at the event ( 28-30 June), either email me on [email protected] or download the volunteering form and send me the completed copy.

Sunday Juniors

We, again, had a group of 9 hardy sailors on Sunday morning with wind speeds from nil to finally around 6 knots.

A special surprise on the day was young India coming to me wanting to know if she could have a go in the Bic Regatta which of course I said yes to. So, as part of her initiation to the Bic, we sent her out solo, and, I must admit, we thought she would capsize but instead she made it look easy.

Don't forget India when you return from Sydney, Bic training is on Saturdays at 10 .00 am.

As part of the training group we also have a few of the Oxley kids joining as well, which should help not only them prepare for the event but also our kids too.

Junior Racing

Junior racing is alive and well with 7 sailors turning up ready to race, with winds gusting to around 12 knots and shifting.

It made for difficult conditions with the odd capsize including Luka's usual face plant into the water (it only happens Luka when you sit on your feet?)

Thanks to George Morton for making everyone adhere to the rules with penalties being strictly adhered too. I believe there was very little complaining on the decisions which again is good training for the regatta.

Despite his face plant Luka nearly lapped the fleet in the final race with the rest at times trying too hard and paying the penalty with the odd swim.

On a personal note, I have to say, compared to a couple of weeks ago it's the best sailing I have seen so far, so congratulations to you all for a great effort.
Club Racing

Racing was held in shifty and gusty conditions followed by holes and knocks which all in all made for good racing with positions changing regularly during the course of the race. Some people realized they had probably chose the wrong sail ( 4.7 ), but the conditions were so variable it was hard to choose.

Picture
It was a good win for Mark with Peter second and Chris third. Thanks to the people who, being a bit early at the start, for coming back on their own accord. I also believe a good lesson may have been learnt by a couple of our younger sailors with gear failure before and during the race. I think it might pay to instead of rolling around in the grass have a second look over the boat. It just might be a better idea!
Here are some photos of the race and the clip of the start, all thanks to Mike B, who this time managed NOT to erase the photos before they got published.  More in the GALLERY.

Autumn Series - Race 7 /26-05-13/ & the rest

30/5/2013

Hi Everyone ,

Another fine weekend after a patchy week weather wise The winds were strong on Saturday forcing a couple of cancellations but turned around on Sunday with ideal conditions all day.

Junior Sailing

Again we had a group of nine junior sailors heading out on the water with the winds between 3 to 7 knots.

We had a bit of early drifting until the wind settled from the south and then everyone got going and had some fun sailing.

A special thanks goes to India and Sienna 2 for taking young Sam out for her second sail and showing her how to use the main sheet.

Big welcoming HELLO to two new boys Dallas and Mitchell who despite some early wild manoeuvres actually started sailing straight lines.

Yes, I did stand in the water again but this Sunday I had more warm clothes on!

Junior racing

All the usual subjects in the boys group turned up ready to race on the day with a new starter in Finn. Even he will admit, he was left a bit overawed by the speed of the boys around the course.

I have yet to view the video which should reveal some interesting mark rounding?

I noticed young Charlie has worked out how to not knock his hat off when tacking:  he leaves his hat off !!! One day Charlie you will finally admit my way is better.

Last but not least our youngest racer LUKA sailed the best he has ever sailed since getting his own boat, all put down to looking where he was going and not sitting on his feet. Well done Luka.

Club Racing - Race 7

We had good conditions by the time racing started with winds from 8 to 15 knots. That made everyone so excited they forgot about the tide at the start line resulting in a general recall, the first one in a long time. Sorry everyone I could see it was inevitable with 30 seconds to go with Thomson winning the award for first over, most of the fleet right behind him. Here is the proof:
For some more "breathtaking" action check these two clips. Thanks Mike B for making and uploading them.
RESTART
FIRST GYBE
Its also nice to see that my training strategy is working fine with Michelle giving her excuse at the start line just in case she sailed slow. As luck would have it, she did sail slow with a nice Gybe rounding capsize due to a mainsheet rigged without the boom saddle (a lesson well learned).

The winner on the day was Jackson from TSS who once he got in front never stopped working the boat all the way to the finish line. Finally George Morton has achieved one of his sailing goals by finishing the race sailing backwards over the line. Don’t forget the coaches on the finish boat who got you there.
__________________________________________________________________ Our Bunnings barbeque is on this Saturday, so if you have a need to visit Bunnings (and who wouldn’t) drop in and buy a sausage and have a chat. These are usually great days. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help on the day. Lets hope its a good day financially for the club.

Midwinter cup

Its' getting closer with the committee really getting serious with the behind the scene organization of the whole event, which by the way is massive, but definitely on track. We have a new member in Barry Tyler who has taken on the role of secretary and canteen coordinator, so we get the minutes emailed each week. He is also working closely with Pieter and Gordana to make sure the canteen works smoothly buy covering all the bases now. Excellent work guys and girls.

Autumn Series - Race 6 /19-05-13/ & everything elseĀ

Hi Everyone ,

What a great weekend with blue skies and good winds on Saturday and the same on Sunday with a little less wind early and building as the day progressed.

Junior Sailing

Sunday morning started with 9 hardy Junior sailors arriving for the first session with perfect conditions for our younger sailors to improve their skills. Congratulations to Riley, Ryan, Spencer and Noah who all improved their taking skills with a bit of in water and on water coaching from Pieter and Me. (Yes it was chilly standing in the water for 50 minutes !!!)
Picture
I have to also thank India who took a new sailor out with Sienna and showed them both the right way to tack and sail a good course.
Junior Racing

Firstly, apparently, all the parents on the shore were totally amazed at one persons ability to persevere in light winds in the race training group. Yep that person was me.

Apparently my patience is becoming legendary?

Fair enough, the winds were shifting and intermittent, but come on boys how many times did I say either pull it on or let it off.

One good thing happened and that was young Nick (the brick) won his first race! Must have pulled the sail on and then let it off.

Well done Nick !

**************************
Club Racing

The Club races on Sunday were held in very different conditions with race one in virtually a drifter. Michelle come out as victor although there was some talk of getting ASADA involved as she was 4 minutes in front of the second place???

The second place could have been anyone's as several boats nearly crossed the line only to have the wind drop out and drift back with the current.

In race Two, luckily, the Weather Gods smiled on us with a wind shift to the East and increased to around 8 knots. That race was completed in under forty minutes with everyone smiling over the finish line.

First in Race Two was Chris followed by Peter and John.

Our two upcoming events, the Bunnings fundraising barby ( Sat 1st June ) and the Open Bic Regatta ( 28th / 30th June ), are coming together but we are still looking for volunteers to help out.

The Bic Regatta it is the biggest event by far on the calendar so any and all help will be appreciated. Just check with the club if you want to volunteer some time.
Picture
Finally our local Chandler (Bias Boats) has come on board to help us promote the Mid Winter Cup and are helping us fill the competitor gift bags with shackle keys, hats, catalogs and stickers. Thanks guys.

Well, it looks like mother nature has returned to rain,  wind and then no wind followed by the rain. That sums up recent weather conditions.

We are still looking for volunteers for both the Bunnings Barby (1st June) and The Bic Mid winter cup (28-30 June). If you can spare a couple of hours (or more) please make use of the links below.

Sunday Juniors

We only had a small group of junior sailors mainly due to Mothers Day, but those who attended had a good sail in light to moderate conditions with a couple of collisions ( usual ) and then capsizing !!!

Yes it was cold but they still wanted to capsize.

A special mention goes to India whose sailing just gets better every week.
Pictureclick to see the galery
Junior Racing

Again we had a hardy bunch turn up for Junior racing with good medium winds and the occasional gusts just to liven it up.

Conditions were a bit difficult but I personally took great satisfaction in nearly everyone coming to me and asking for fixes to their sailing problems on the day. See, I told you Sienna that if you pull the sail on before you tack it doesn’t get caught on the transom with some good tacks resulting.

Everyone is improving each week with Patrick really settling in and the Bic boys keeping up with the challenging Bic Skiffs.

With only seven competitors on the start line it was an easy start so I blew it! I still have no idea why I was so far back.

Tom Slocombe, Roger and I had a great tussle to the top mark, with me just getting to mark A in front. On the down wind, Tom again just got in front before the Gybe mark and then very kindly capsized allowing me back in front.

At that time my outhaul decided to unravel which meant the upwind was full of roundups for me.

Tom and Roger
managed to get away and then Michelle overtook me on the way to the finish line. I mustn’t forget to mention both William and Trish both of who,s sailing has definitely stepped up a couple of notches in recent weeks.

Must be all that coaching Trish?
Windsurfing
Paul Hand was away at Lake Catharaba last weekend competing in the states and unofficially finished in the top ten.

I say unofficially because one of his sail numbers fell off so several finishes weren’t recorded.

Paul tells me though all in all he had a great weekend.

Hi everyone

We have some big projects coming up in June with the first one being our fundraising Barby at our local Bunnings on Saturday the 1st of June.

Yes, we are looking for volunteers to help on the day so if you can spare
a couple of hours just let me know .

( previous sausage cooking skill not essential, but an advantage)

We then have the Mid winter Bic Cup from the 28th to the 30th of June and again we are looking for volunteers over the three days to assist we boats, parking, cooking and general duties . If you think you might be able to spare some time just complete the attached form and return it to the club so we can find a spot for you.

Junior Sailing

Sunday Juniors was held in maximum wind conditions (8 to 12 knots) with some high speeds, collisions, near misses and capsizing but overall all the juniors handled the conditions well.

A special commendation to India and Sienna 2 for a great team effort.

Good work girls!
Picture
Junior racing

Junior racing was also held in 8 to 12 knots with occasional gusts of around14 knots, so, again some high speeds and a few capsizes.

Dillon and Charlie who have started training in Bics found the going a bit tough as the Bics are not as forgiving as the Tera's. There were a few capsizes between them, especially on the broad reaches with just a bit to much main out resulting on high siding a spat out.

Our lone girl competitor (Kayla) showed the boys up winning two of the four races (large grin was evident as she crossed the finish line).
Club Race

Racing was held in 10 to 16 knots with a close tussle between Peter, Jackson and Judge John up to the first mark.  Jackson was rounding first but
then unfortunately he headed for the wrong mark ( C )and by the time he realized his mistake both Peter and John had passed him.

That was how they finished in just on one hour.

There was some good speed shown by all and again a special congratulations to Trisha who usually struggles in those conditions but actually finished right behind the other 4.7. Good work Trisha (must be all that coaching in the 470).

Hi Everyone,

Well another great weekend with blue skies and reasonable winds with Saturday skilled practice with Trisha and Rob sailing with me in the 470 culminating with a slow broadreach home from the deep hole . Thanks to Mark ( Luka's dad ) for coming down to check on us in the powerboat. Like all true stubborn sailors Rob and I refused a tow and sailed home ( very slowly ).

Picture
Sunday Juniors

Sunday dawned with blue skies but no wind so to keep the kids interested we had a couple of paddling races which included the rescue boat.
Good work Aidan, Charlie and Michael even though you didn’t win.

Our boat captain Aidan decided it was cold so he wore jeans for the day. Well, that was until he fell off the pontoon while helping India turn her boat around.
The last words I heard were: "I don’t want to get my jean wet !!! " followed by a loud splash and a lot of laughter from the parent gallery ( photo evidence attached ). Needless to say we never stopped ribbing him for the rest of the day.

Junior racing

Again, we had a good turn up for racing with the new skill of leeward side sailing being attempted due to virtually no wind and with only two races being held. The girls won the first race with Ruby 1st, Kayla 2nd over the line and Dillon 3rd .

It was great to see everyone trying hard in very slow conditions. We have also taken Charlie Dillon and Luka aside for BIC training on Friday after school to hopefully get them up to speed for the BIC Regatta.
In their first lesson they took to the boats very confidently and even surprised me with the way they adapted to the new boats.
Racing

Race 3 of the Autumn Series was held in light conditions with two races on the day. The fleet totaled 19 competitors including two windsurfers which made it interesting both at the starts and at the finish line especially in race one with everyone finishing together. Thanks TO Mike Brice for managing to write down sail numbers and finish time that Aidan (dry shorts) and I were yelling at him. More stress than work Mike?

Race two was especially good with good pressure and tight racing with Peter Fell first in the dinghys and Tony first in the Windsurfers. The only low point of the day was the lack of courtesy shown by some powerboat drivers. It totally amazes me how it is so difficult to give way or go around a sailing boat?

News

Both the Bic Regatta and the Bunnings Fundraiser are taking shape with the first steering committee meeting for the Regatta taking place this Friday at the club so look out for more news as both these events grow nearer.

Hi Everyone!

Hope you all had a good weekend especially with mother nature putting on a good two day result.

Sunday Juniors

Sunday Juniors continues to grow with approx 15 Junior sailors as young as six taking part in the first session with perfect 3 to 6 knots and smooth water.

All the kids are showing great promise with outstanding results from Noah and Connor with Connor now moving to 10.30 Junior Racing.

Congratulations boys !
Sunday Junior Racing

Junior Racing is starting to become very interesting with tight racing, capsizing and competitive mark roundings although I was told by the on water judge ( Pieter Verstoep ) that some people were not doing there penalty turns for touching marks.

Luka in the Bic has now got a new mainsheet which definitely worked better being smaller than the original so that it runs easier through the blocks.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
The Bic Regatta is presently in the official flyer set-up stage with all changes being passed on to the BIC company in France ( yes, France ) for the final product . The club is now seeking people to volunteer for daily rosters over the course of the event and we are also looking for a couple of people to help the committee in organizing the event. If you have a bit of spare time to help us set the structure of the event up just let us know at the club.
______________________________________________________________________________________
Sunday Racing

We had excellent racing weather on Sunday with consistent winds from the S/E up to 15/17 knots.

I believe several of yesterdays competitors are now going to heed my advice on sail selection with a few people overpowered. They should know by now as like most experts I am never, never wrong. OK, maybe occasionally !
Results:

1st Peter Fell
2nd Andrew Todd
3rd John Brown

Sailability

Tuesday's are finally going well for our guests from Sailability Gold Coast with good conditions last week and approximately 80 clients for the day.

The sailors have discovered our method of sandbank positions by running into them and then remembering the next time not to go there although some still try their luck, and as we do, and fail again.
Have a good week everyone
